Job Description

POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, the Student Life Director will act as a senior member within the Division of Student Affairs and will lead the Division at the discretion and in the absence of the Assistant Vice President. The Student Life Director is responsible for developing and implementing a broad range of programs and services responsive to students’ needs while cultivating a culture of student learning, campus and civic engagement, academic success, and lifelong achievement.

Duties include (but are not limited to): ·

  • Collaborate with members of the Queens College administration to both advocate for students and achieve the Division’s goals.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Office for Student Affairs and students, academic departments, faculty, staff and the community to support the mission of the College.
  • Interpret policies and procedures in compliance with the City University of New York, local, state, and federal law.
  • Direct meetings to ensure efficient communication and understanding of emerging and on-going issues, as well as strategic priorities for the College.
  • Provide direction and supervision for the Directors of Judicial Affairs and Service Learning, Student Development and Leadership, and Veteran Support Services & ROTC.
  • Provide direction and intervention for students in crisis and non-crisis, including intervening with mental health staff, providing victim advocacy, and working with staff and students affected by the crisis.
  • Manage and implement the Division’s Goals and Targets, Strategic Plan, Mission, and Guiding Principles.
  • Oversee budget(s) as assigned, ensuring that expenditures are within budget allocations.
  • Study, analyze and anticipate the needs and desires of the student body and translate such selected activities into practical and feasible programs in keeping with the general direction of overall College and University goals and mission.
  • Direct the development, oversight and management of Divisional publications, communications, and web presence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Support the strategic priorities of the College by serving as a representative of the Division of Student Affairs on various College- and University-wide committees and projects.
  • Chair the Behavioral Intervention Team and serve on the Title IX Committee.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Vice Presidents within and outside CUNY as a guide for defining norms and introducing innovations to the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Present workshops on student behavioral issues to include addressing disruptive student behavior both in and out of the classroom; University expectations, prevention of and responses to academic misconduct; compliance with mandates; and creating a campus culture that promotes character development and civic responsibility.


QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with behavioral intervention teams, best practices for student success, development and retention.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Successful prior experience in student affairs, academic integrity, Title IX also preferred.
  • Experience in a higher education setting working with marginalized communities.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in a senior leadership role within the student affairs/services or related.
  • An earned Master’s Degree from an accredited institution, preferably in student affairs/development, counseling, educational administration, or related field.
  • Experience working with student leader and targeted under-served groups.

  • Develops plans for, and leads a student development services unit which comprises a variety of services and programs
  • Assists senior management in providing leadership, developing policy, conducting strategic planning, and representing student affairs in various professional activities
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the portfolio of student services in supporting divisional and College-wide goals; oversees data collection, tracking, and reporting systems
  • Collaborates with academic affairs professionals and other in supporting retention and building a comprehensive learning environment that fosters the intellectual, psychological, social, leadership and recreational development of a diverse student population
  • Manages fiscal and human resources; may oversee grant management activities for selected programs

Salary range$83,878- $141,858; Salary commensurate with education and experience.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
