To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
Associate degree required, Bachelor's degree (B. A.) preferred, in safety or other fields acceptable by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, or combination of education and experience equivalent to AS and four years of prior safety experience.
Thorough knowledge of Federal and State statutes (OSHA, ANSI, NFPA) and Workers' Compensation regulations.

Area Safety Manager will establish and promote a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment by performing the following duties independently or through subordinate supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Formulates general safety policies and procedures to be followed by company or plant personnel in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
- Establish relationships with managers to stay abreast of current and future training needs.
- Keeps managers and Team Members alert to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals, and other hazardous substances.
- Use Worker's Compensation knowledge to reduce or transfer risk and set up prevention programs/techniques.
- Devises, supervises, and coordinates training programs or media to increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
- Ensures that all accidents are appropriately investigated and reported to insurance carriers. May personally participate in the investigation of accidents and injuries. Conducts studies and analyses of accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
- Consults with all departments on the design and use of equipment, shops, fire prevention, and safety program.
- Maintains safety files and records.
- Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
- Oversees the administration of workers' compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to cut down on lost employee time and cut back on unjust claims.
- Inspects or tours organization facilities to detect existing or potential accidents and health hazards and recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
- Using demonstrated Behavioral Based Safety tools, inspect/tour facilities’ job sites to detect existing or potential accidents and health hazards, comply with company standards, and recommend corrective or preventative measures where indicated. Identifies and implements appropriate training for the workforce through Safety and Operations team.
- Compiles and submits accident reports required by regulatory agencies.
- Participates in investigating accidents and injuries and cooperates in preparing material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Makes studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.

- Possess effective verbal and written communication skills with division management, operations, and customers.
- Keeps abreast of changing safety regulations within the industry.
- Adaptable to changing demands, follows management direction, takes responsibility for completing projects, consistently at work and on time, keeps commitments, seeks increased responsibilities, and offers help to others.
- Lead multi-disciplinary teams in incident reviews and problem solving
- Display strong leadership and organizational skills with strong attention to detail
- Portray ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously.
