Main Purpose of Job

The Curator of the Maryland Commission on Artistic Property is responsible for the management, care, and preservation and interpretation of the art collections owned or on loan to the state of Maryland. These include the Annapolis Collection and the Peabody Art Collection. It is the mandate of the Commission, as part of the Maryland State Archives, to oversee the display, conservation and interpretation of the art collection throughout the Annapolis complex, state buildings, and at other locations where the works of art are on exhibit or in storage. The Curator is also responsible for supervising the creation and maintenance of an on-line catalog of all collection items. The position also oversees all exhibits and publications involving the collections. The Curator manages the state-owned art collection and its related websites, databases, on-and-off-site collection storage facilities; oversees al incoming and outgoing loans; maintenance of administrative files; coordinate rights and reproduction requests; assesses the conservation needs and oversees related treatments of objects in the state-owned art collection. The position serves as a project manager and researcher for the creation and management of mdstatehouse.net, an online chronology for a Historic Structure report of the Maryland State House. Incumbent directs research, establishes standards, identifies relevant collections, manages website, and represents Archives on hiring committees and interagency projects including completion of HSR and execution of preservation, rehabilitation and maintenance projects at the State House. The position serves as staff of the State House Office of Interpretation, overseeing all daily maintenance and preservation of the permanent exhibits in the public areas of the Maryland State House. The position develops and implements, in conjunction with the Director of Artistic Property, an interpretive program for the State House.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Ensure management, care, and preservation of the state-owned collection, and oversee daily management of its inventory. this includes an annual inventory of the collection, maintenance of loan agreements for objects housed at other institutions, maintenance of loan agreements for objects on loan from other institutions in the Annapolis Complex, administering loans from collection for temporary exhibitions and travel, and monitoring of the condition of objects in the collection.


  • Plan and oversee interpretation of art collections on Archives website and keep the information about the collections current.


  • Assist in handling duties of the Director Artistic Property, Exhibits and Outreach on an as-needed basis or advise of all activities and issues that arise during an absence.


  • Manage exhibitions in State House, legislative office complex, and Archives Search Room, including maintenance to reproduction graphics and exhibition cases.


  • Oversee the solicitation and award of contract work to conservators, arrangements for transportation of artwork, and oversight of work on progress either at the Archives or the conservators' studios.


  • Work with the staff of Government House, The Office of the Governor, The First Lady, President of the Senate and the speaker of the House on issues relating to the history and exhibition of the art collection non-display in Government House, and Legislative Office buildings.


  • Manage and supervise the care, preservation and interpretation of state-owned art collection in Government House, coordinating all work with staff of the Government House and Office of the First Lady. Serve as primary staff contact for the administration of the Government House Trust.


  • Support the work of the State House Trust by administering Trust polls and directives in coordination with Secretary of the State House Trust.


  • Respond to public inquiries regarding items in the art collections. This includes granting rights for reproduction and conducting research on the collection for public information. Field regular inquiries and requests from personnel in other state agencies, particularly the executive and legislative branches, concerning the art collection.


  • Administer Docent certification program for the State House Office of Interpretation and conduct outreach efforts with local tour companies.


  • Supervise and direct the work of the APC and State House interns.


  • Other duties as assigned by director of Artistic Property or the State Archivist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1) Experience interpreting Maryland history and/or working with collections related to Maryland history.

2) Demonstrated experience with current museum collections management practices and principles, including but not limited to inventory, loans, and object condition reporting.

3) Preparatory, handling, and art installation experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
