Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager is responsible for the Wildlife Rehabilitation Department and works closely with the veterinarian to ensure all rehabilitation patients receive excellent care.This position requires a positive, energetic person who likes challenges and isn’t afraid of change.
This job requires a person who can lead, is self-motivated, can work independently and with others, can prioritize many tasks, plan projects, and has a strong knowledge of animal care and how to deal with medical issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
●Overall :
oReport to Wildlife Director and Veterinarian
oMonitor and respond to emails
oBe familiar with the history of the Houston Humane Society and HHS Wildlife Center
oMust receive rabies pre-exposure vaccine and test titer levels regularly
●Supervisory :
oFacilitate proper communication up and down the chain of command
oHold department meetings and one-on-one meetings as needed
oHire and train Wildlife Rehabilitation Coordinators, assign specific tasks for in-charge coordinators and criteria for them to meet - including annual reviews and verbal and written feedback.
oEnsure all coordinators are following protocols and training technicians and volunteers according to protocols.
oAssist coordinators with hiring of technicians as needed, with creating training programs for technicians and ensure there are enough interns and volunteers and communicate any needs to the Wildlife Volunteer Coordinator.
oHandle any volunteer or intern conflicts that cannot be resolved by Wildlife Rehabilitation Coordinators, if they can’t be resolved, escalate to the Wildlife Volunteer Coordinator.
●Medical:
oCreate and/or update protocols for care and feeding of animals, medication, care and cleaning animal caging and the facility, for Director and Veterinarian review.
oStay up-to-date on wildlife protocols by researching and attending conferences.
oDetermine capacity numbers for each species along with Director and Veterinarian.
oAssist with animal care when needed, Inform veterinarian of any medical issues that need attention
oPerform euthanasia of critically ill or injured animals, and make decisions on animals that have long-term health issues or have shown minimal improvement
oUpdate Wildlife Hospital and Admissions the number of available cages available each day, by species and size
●Systems:
oKeep track of inventory levels and make purchases for the department
oAdd items to Amazon Wish Lists, and get approval for extraordinary or expensive items from Wildlife Director
oKeep track of being on budget
oArrange for repairs for equipment when needed
●Miscellaneous:
oArrange set up and deep-clean duties
oDebrief on successes and failures with coordinators and Wildlife Director and create a plan for the coming year
oAssist with Critical Care duties
Qualifications:
●Bachelor’s degree (Required)
●Must have reliable transportation
●Must be able to start two weeks from job offer
●Must be able to pass a background check
Skills:
●This job requires a person who can lead, is self-motivated, can work independently and with others, can prioritize many tasks, plan projects, and has a strong knowledge of animal care and how to deal with medical issues.
●Ability to work productively in an unstructured environment with frequent interruptions.
●Must be well-organized and able to effectively manage multiple tasks, projects, and responsibilities.
●Must possess problem-solving skills and take initiative when issues arise.
●Ability to work well with diverse groups of people.
●Ability to maintain a calm, respectful, and professional (yet assertive) demeanor when dealing with difficult situations.
●Strong written and verbal communications skills.
●Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, lift up to 30lbs, climb a step ladder, and read small text. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these duties
●Must be proficient in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Publisher).
Shift Hours:
●Monday – Friday
●Base workday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
●Must be available to work at least 40 hours per week.

●Salaried position

Changing Office Locations:
The HHS TWRC Wildlife Center will be changing locations to a new and improved building in late 2023/early 2024. The new location will be 3100 W. Fuqua Street, Houston, TX 77045. All employees must be willing to work at the current location and switch to the new location after the move.
