Job Description

About The Clean Slate Initiative

Founded in 2019, the Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) is a national bipartisan organization advancing policies to automate and expand eligibility for record clearance. One in three Americans lives with a past arrest or conviction record that limits their ability to find work, continue their education, obtain a professional license, or fully participate in family and civic life.

The Clean Slate Initiative’s vision is that everyone in America should have a fair opportunity to work, have a safe home, care for their families, and contribute to their community. We achieve this vision by uniting businesses, advocates, community members, and impacted people across the country to ensure that conviction and non-conviction records are no longer a life sentence to poverty and that past mistakes will no longer define our futures. Since its inception, the organization has won clean slate policies in Utah, Michigan, Connecticut, Delaware, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Altogether, these policies will remove barriers and increase opportunities for more than three million Americans. Clean State Initiative will work with bipartisan leaders and organizations and offer our expertise on what works: intelligent policy design, an eye toward implementation, and campaign strategies that center lived experience. Along the way, we will work to redefine the narrative around people with records, cutting through the bias and stigma, to reorient the legal system to live up to the ideals of second chances. Learn more about our work here.

The Vice President (VP) of Programs will be a critical leader in CSI’s strategy to pass laws in 15 states in the next six years that expand eligibility and streamline the clearance process for arrest or conviction records, ultimately unlocking opportunities for up to 14 million people in America — a strategy that’s been met with overwhelming support across political divides. Earlier this year, we became a member of the Audacious project, receiving a historic investment in second chances across the country. To achieve this scale, CSI is growing its remote staff.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Vice President of Programs will be a key leadership team member, overseeing the general management of all program areas and driving the strategic direction of CSI’s programs and campaigns. In addition, the VP will coordinate with a wide range of bipartisan allies and manage a team of talented leaders responsible for implementing Clean Slate’s strategy.

Working closely with other senior staff team members, the VP will ensure seamless coordination across state, field, legislative, policy and coalition tactics that advance CSI’s goals. This leader will also be able to coach and mentor a highly collaborative, close-knit and mission-driven team. There are currently three people on this team; however, the organization anticipates hiring at least two to five additional members of the programs team within the next year. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a movement transforming lives impacted by the criminal justice system. This position is considered exempt for overtime purposes.

CSI is open to candidates wishing to work remotely or in our office in Orlando, Florida. In addition, we will discuss a hybrid or in-office work location with candidates near Orlando. The position requires travel at least six times a year.

Areas of Leadership

The VP of Programs will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for all program areas. The position will be a part of the senior management team that drives the overall strategy for the organization and represents CSI on a state and national basis. The VP of Programs will focus on the following areas of leadership:

Program Leadership & Management: Serve as a collaborative thought partner on the Senior Leadership Team in developing CSI’s long-term trajectory, organizational development strategies, and programming that supports the goals identified in CSI's Strategic Plan and expansion of CSI’s impact. Provide leadership in inter-team communication and cohesiveness to integrate cross-program activities and functions, sustaining culture and supporting staff during organizational growth. Serve as a thought leader and ensure the development of clean slate policy materials, initiatives, briefings, and convenings in service and support of grantee partners and local and national leaders. Leverage CSI’s resources in alignment with our strategy to pass Clean Slate policies and build up local campaigns ensuring measurable and long-term impact, particularly related to increasing the power and influence of grassroots organizations and partners.

  • Key Qualifications: Experience serving as a senior leader developing the strategy for bipartisan political or grassroots, civic engagement, issue or advocacy campaigns in states or at the national level with a track record of wins. Outstanding organizational, programmatic, and financial management experience, including the ability to move work from concept to implementation and completion. Strong project management skills and experience leading complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth. Significant experience working in coalition(s), including developing shared plans, coordinating external and internal communications, and understanding internal political dynamics among partner groups across the political spectrum. Experience implementing monitoring and evaluation practices within grantmaking.

Policy, Advocacy, & External Relations: Provide overall strategic vision and leadership to policy and advocacy staff on key policy issues. Ensure that key policy, advocacy, and legislative strategies and outcomes are evaluated for maximum community and organizational impact. Represent CSI externally and participate in high-level programming with partners, policymakers, and business leaders to advance the mission, policy efforts, and partnerships and pursue the mission of clean slate policies. Manage the maintenance and development of strategic partnerships that expand CSI’s national network of state-based organizations and local leaders who support and inform CSI’s automated record clearance agenda at the state and federal levels.

  • Key Qualifications: History of successful partnerships with policymakers and coalition allies and successful navigation of legislative and other policy-making processes. A track record of leveraging research, data, and policy to inform program strategy, and previous experience leading campaign-style advocacy or large-scale campaigns that leverage narrative change, bipartisan collaboration and movement-building to impact policy change. Track record of active participation in coalitions representing diverse perspectives to further advocacy goals and serving as an effective advocate and responsible spokesperson for a movement or issue. Experience with grassroots organizing and grasstops engagement and deployment to mobilize activist networks at the state and national levels.

People Management: Build, mentor, and coach a high-performing team, defining metrics for success and identifying opportunities for professional growth and leadership. Lead with an equity-centered approach that reflects the organization’s values and centers the humanity of each team member. Collaborate with staff to develop systems to ensure consistent, high-quality goal-setting and project management. Develop strategies that maximize synergies across teams and campaign initiatives.

  • Key Qualifications: Demonstrated success in hiring, managing, developing, and retaining individuals and diverse teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility, span-of-control and performance. Ability to set clear priorities, delegate, and guide investment in people and systems; keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills to support and enable sound decision-making. Demonstrated commitment to applying an equity lens to management with experience engaging with directly impacted communities. History of successfully partnering with peer leaders in developing and implementing organizational practices and systems.

Compensation & Benefits

This is an outstanding full-time, exempt opportunity for a highly motivated senior leader to join a well-respected and rapidly growing organization. Clean Slate Initiative is prepared to offer an attractive compensation package, including a competitive base salary of $190,000-$210,000. The final salary within this range will be determined based on relevant experience. This position is expected to travel approximately 30-40% of the time.
