Reporting to the Chief People and Culture Officer, the Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion Officer will be responsible for incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion into the operational framework and espoused values of Sutter Health. The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will be a member of the Executive Leadership team and through collaborative partnerships, enabling others to create a culture of inclusion at all sites/entities. This senior leader will continue the work of weaving a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture through strategy, education, communication, organizational change/employee engagement, talent acquisition and retention. The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will provide vision, leadership, and coordination of efforts to ensure diversity, inclusion, equity, and respect for all staff, leadership, physicians and caregivers across all SUTTER entities. The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will represent SUTTER internally and externally and be considered the thought leader for the organization.The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will engage and collaborate with leaders across the clinical and non-clinical enterprise, to facilitate the creation of a sustainable culture that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion where every individual believes their dignity is respected and feels a strong sense of belonging. This leader will act as a key advisor to senior leaders and serve as the principal architect of Diversity and Inclusion strategies, structures, and organizational commitments across Sutter Health.
The Diversity and Inclusion Officer will lead the organization in ensuring that diversity, equity, inclusion are embedded as imperatives in the strategic plan, human capital processes, talent acquisition, staff retention, leadership development and succession planning, recognizing that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is the filter needed to look at everything in order to create a place and sense where everybody belongs. This leader will ensure that all initiatives are designed to enhance the human experience for all team members, patients and community members.
:
Education:
- A Master’s degree or higher in organizational development, business, education or equivalent experience related field
- Bachelor’s Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Health or related field required
Qualifications and Experience:
- Expert knowledge about diversity and inclusion technology, such as cultural audits, diversity councils, diversity and inclusion education, benchmarking, human resource audits
- 15+ years of professional work experience developing DEI initiatives across large and complex organizations of more than 25,000 employees
- Experience leading DEI initiatives and while enabling and providing oversight to a team of DEI practitioners
- Demonstrated success collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders, and providing leadership to a vibrant environment, preferably one in the midst of enormous fluidity and change
- Experience in a leadership position in the DEI function
- Expert knowledge and fluency in diversity and inclusion content, including cultural competency, unconscious bias, race, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, language, differently abled, religion etc.
- Cultural awareness and agility, including the ability to understand the cultural context and point of view of others, in the context of cultures, including both minority and majority groups, and adapt one’s behavior to the situation.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies:
- Leadership skills and attributes, including executive presence; earning trust by being trustworthy; the ability to persuade audiences; recognizable passion about diversity and inclusion; a clear and consistent focus on internal branding, and modeling; openness to own personal learning and growth.
- Change management skills applicable to large systems and complex change.
- Ability to develop diversity and inclusion metrics and a dashboard to ensure accountability, tracking and monitoring of efforts.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross functional teams and collaboration among colleagues including peers, leaders and staff at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work at a strategic level but also willing to dig into tactical work.
- Ability to communicate well across organizational levels with well-developed influencing skills.
- Ability to successfully negotiate and collaborate with others of different skill sets, backgrounds a level within and external to the organization.
- Ability to effectively conduct meetings, both formal and informal.
- Strong leadership experience managing teams in a high volume, metric-driven environment.
- Ability to demonstrate strong advocacy for equity and social justice and a commitment to inclusion as a business strategy.
- Ability to review data and use it to drive decisions and communication so that DEI strategies and metrics are in alignment with SUTTER’s mission and goals.
- Strong problem solving and negotiation skills.
- Requires minimal direction from leadership and possesses the ability to learn quickly.
- Comfort and demonstrated success creating and presenting material intended to influence executive leadership.
Travel:
- Requires travel throughout the organization 10-50% of the time, typically day trips but could also be evening and overnight dependent on location
Pay Range: $148.14 - $200.42 / hour
The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
