Job Description
What To Expect
Tesla’s Solar Engineering group is looking for a highly motivated individual to program manage new design engineering projects for solar panel components and accessories designed by Tesla. This is a cross-functional role that requires coordination between many different groups within and outside of Tesla.
You will interface with design engineering, compliance, system test, reliability, supply chain and install operations to define and drive improvements and modifications to Tesla PV panel mounting systems. You will be immersed in the design engineering process and will shepherd projects from concept through to prototype validation and then production ramp. You will use your engineering background to understand the product requirements, technical risks, and the validation strategy to accelerate the development process. You will communicate and present project status, highlight schedule risk, and develop recovery plans in the event of project slip.
As a Technical Program Manager, you will be expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy while contributing to the development of tools and processes that improve the organization’s productivity. The ideal candidate will have sufficient mechanical engineering background to take on design tasks in addition to program management duties.
You will be based out of the Bay Area (Fremont) with the expectation of some travel to our manufacturing facilities in either California or Nevada as program needs dictate.
What You’ll Do
  • Manage program costs for R&D forecast and spend and monitor cost impact of changes
  • Prioritize the engineering team project work based on risk, resources, and payback
  • Create, maintain, communicate, and present schedules for design engineering projects to the engineering leadership team
  • Define processes that will improve risk and change management
  • Work with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Reliability, Test, Supply Chain, Product Management, and other supporting functions in order to identify and scope projects for key solar subsystems
  • Identify creative ways to overcome obstacles and meet the schedule despite setbacks
What You’ll Bring
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of engineering projects for mass produced products required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the design cycle.
  • Demonstrated experience creating, maintaining, and communicating schedules.
  • B.S. in a technical discipline: engineering, physics, or equivalent. Mechanical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of multilevel Bill of Material hierarchies.
  • Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Skills with common 3D CAD software, e.g. SolidWorks.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills with ability to understand complex problems and summarize in a simple way to a wide audience.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in an engineering environment with responsibility for implementing or managing change. Ideally, 2+ years of direct program management experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of product release cycle as it relates to the creation and change management of parts and BOM structures.
Benefits
Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire:
  • Aetna PPO and HSA plans > 2 medical plan options with $0 payroll deduction
