Summary

The Scientist, Process and Formulations position will support product development from bench-top experiments to pilot-scale and commercial launch. This eager chemist or chemical engineer is responsible for the formulation of new pesticide and fertilizer products, design and execution of laboratory and pilot scale experimental plans, production scale up, and management of project

timelines. The Scientist will generate samples for Good Laboratory Practices work, Biology field trials and Package stability testing and participate in the analysis and reporting of those results. The individual will develop and create ingredient and formulation specifications within the Scotts Product Lifecycle

Management (PLM) documentation system. This role is a critical part of the product development team, interacting directly with Packaging Development, Biology, Marketing, Purchasing, Regulatory and Supply Chain in order to bring consumer products to market.

In this role you will:

• Prepare and arrange chemical samples for shipment and waste, per DOT, EPA, and OSHA regulations
• Perform all project tasks in compliance with corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety principles
• Create, route and approve ingredient and formula specifications
• Provide hands-on support for manufacturing trials
• Critical in support of state and EPA registration dossiers, potential acquisitions or partnerships, competitive product analysis and cost-out initiatives
• Provide technical advice and mentor junior scientists
• Develop strong relationships with a wide range of experts in industry and academia to understand and mine new technologies, research methods, and trends to help drive innovation
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners including R&D colleagues, marketing, supply chain, regulatory, procurement, etc. to ensure strong alignment on plans that meet business objectives
• Maintain laboratory upkeep, including chemical and equipment supply.
• Document, analyze, and report data to cross-functional teams
• Create and verify new formulations at lab, pilot, and manufacturing scales
• Manage chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheet storage and archiving
• Design and execute experimental plans to develop formulas and obtain qualitative and quantitative data required for product launch
• Develop commercially viable formulations and processes consistent with business unit goals

The perfect person will have:

• Familiarity working in a laboratory environment including using, but not limited to, the following:, basic analytical instrumentation, mixing apparatus, quantitative chemical analysis, and chemical reactivity (e.g., acids, bases, flammables)
• Willingness to work with lawn & garden formulations including pesticides as part of a hands-on scientific team.
• Initiative and drive to identify opportunities and increase their overall contributions
• Strong working knowledge in experimental design, statistical analysis and interpretation of research results that leads to clear conclusions and decisions.
• Adaptability and flexibility to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Scientific curiosity and rigor with attention to detail; strong math skills.
• Ph.D. preferred in chemistry, chemical engineering or related fields. Candidates with M.S. degree and 5+ years of relevant formulation experience (beyond the degree), or B.S. degree and 12+ years of relevant formulation experience will also be considered.
• Strong communication skills and ability to interact with senior leadership across the organization.

The starting budgeted pay range for this role will generally fall between $71,300.00-83,900.00. Scotts will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location.
