Summary:The Senior Food Scientist executes Custom Culinary® product development projects and technical initiatives to develop new and optimized products for branded and key accounts that support the overall Custom Culinary® business strategy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works within multiple priorities, projects and timelines concurrently.
  • Follows Product Development processes to ensure efficiencies and effectiveness of function.
  • Supports Innovation activities that support the long-term strategy of the organization.
  • Applies science, culinary and engineering knowledge to deliver the highest quality products based on research, production technology, ease of manufacturing, financial parameters, quality control, packaging, nutritional requirements, regulatory requirements and USDA/FDA applications.
  • Uses scientific theory, technical understanding and creative problem-solving skills to approach projects.
  • Represents Product Development in professional business relationships with Custom Culinary® customers and suppliers, academics, government and corporations in the food industry.
  • Completes product formulation activities to drive efficient production of safe and regulatory-compliant food products.
  • Maintains GLPs, GMPs, and all required laboratory records, using electronic systems and written protocols.
  • Responsible for the design, planning, execution, and reporting of experiments and commercialization of projects with intermediate to high complexity.
  • Ensures safety, quality, legality, and authenticity of products in accordance with regulations and standards, as this role dictates.
  • Communicates project progress internally to R&D Manager, appropriate Marketing personnel and Sales team, and externally with customers and suppliers as directed.
  • Works independently, exercising ingenuity and judgment in the approach to tasks.
  • Supports continuous improvement and cost savings opportunities with annual targeted savings.
  • Develops new and optimized products by executing technical activities that support branded and customized products for key accounts that align with the overall Custom Culinary® business strategy.
  • Responsible for maintaining the security of all information regarding product formulas and related confidential information.
  • May approve new raw materials, aid in defining raw material status, and consult on quality-related issues.
  • Effectively interact with cross-functional teams to provide technical information to respond to internal and external customer needs.
  • Acts as a consultant to colleagues on appropriate current materials and vendors to meet technical and commercial requirements.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry, Culinology or related technical field
  • Strong understanding of ingredient functionality and interrelationship of ingredients, process, and packaging
  • Self-starter with a passion for learning is a must
  • Must be able to understand and work through project parameters, including customer procedures, product development processes, internal and external manufacturing capabilities, and technical resources to produce a product to meet the project objective
  • Ability to influence and motivate others
  • Must be able to manage multiple assignments/tasks concurrently with the ability to question the priority of work
  • Excellent communication, project management and problem-solving skills
  • At least 6 years of Research & Product Development experience within the food industry, including direct work with customers and manufacturing facilities
  • This job requires full-time onsite presence in a laboratory and kitchen setting. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to touch, manipulate, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is required to taste or smell. The employee will be required to use industrial and residential cooking appliances and analytical equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
  • Solid understanding of food chemistry, analytical testing, formulations, and processing used in food manufacturing
  • Culinary experience is beneficial
