Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly linked to disease pathologies, and we believe that ‘normalizing’ mitochondrial function can ameliorate or reverse disease states.


Astellas is announcing a(n) Scientist I, In Vivo opportunity at their Mitobridge site in Cambridge, MA.


Purpose


The primary purpose of the Scientist I, Translational Science role is to design and carry out experiments in the laboratory, as well as design in vivo studies to build and support all division projects in the late discovery pipeline. Additional responsibilities include partnering across research divisions, working collaboratively with other experts within the Astellas global drug development team to identify ways to develop novel therapies.


Essential Job Responsibilities


  • Initiate and oversee collaborations with internal/external collaborators and CROs.
  • Partner with additional experts within Mitobridge as well as across divisions to integrate mitochondria, autophagy, immunology and metabolism focused programs in the pipeline.
  • Provide updates and advice to project team, senior management, including evaluation of data and their potential impact on drug programs and clinical/regulatory strategy.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Develop in-house capabilities to support work performed at CROs.
  • Design, planning, execution, and analysis of animal experiments to assess in vivo efficacy, biomarker, safety, and PK/PD profiles of small molecules therapeutics to move programs from discovery to clinical development.
  • Lead and/or participate multiple projects within discovery, provide scientific expertise, guidance and strategy to successfully progress programs to various milestones.
  • Effectively communicate experimental findings in oral, written, and visual formats.


Qualifications


Required


  • Highly independent thinker with the ability to translate abstract concepts and complexity into actionable solutions.
  • Hands-on experience co-leading drug discovery projects from target validation to IND-enabling studies
  • Capable of working with multidisciplinary research teams and have a demonstrated track records of success in independent scientific research.
  • PhD. with 0-3 years, MS with 6+ years or BS with 8 + years of highly relevant in vivo Pharmacology experience in a biopharmaceutical setting
  • Demonstrated application of expertise to drug discovery in the Metabolism, Autophagy and Immunology therapeutic area
  • Experience as a team member and/or leading multi-disciplinary teams focused on small molecule drug discovery
  • Strong background in Metabolism, Molecular Biology, Cell Signaling, and Immunology
  • A team player and mentor, who listens effectively and invites response and discussion. A collaborator who communicates in an open, clear, complete, timely and consistent manner
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills with an enthusiasm for participating in a fast-paced environment characterized by rigorous science and innovative thinking
  • Knowledge of preclinical and clinical biomarker discovery and development

Preferred


  • Extensive experience with tissue processing and ex vivo analytical assays such as ELISA, Western, qPCR, FACS etc.
  • Experience with various mouse and rat models of diseases.
  • Experience in managing external partners (CRO & academic groups)
  • Extensive experience designing in vivo studies, ideally involving small molecules therapeutics in mouse and rat
  • Experience working within large pharma organizations and/or biotech/start up environment
  • Extensive experience performing in vivo procedures in rodents, including preparation and administration of therapeutics (via intravenous, oral gavage, intraperitoneal, and subcutaneous routes) and collecting material (blood, tissue, etc.) for ex vivo analysis
