The Department of Microbiology & Immunology has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate 1, SOM position. Our group is pioneering RNA therapeutics for the in vivo genetic modulation of beta cells and tumor-infiltrating myeloid cells. This allows an unprecedented opportunity not only to understand the beta cell biology in diabetes and myelopoiesis in cancer but also to develop new therapeutics for clinical use. We seek a highly motivated, ambitious, creative, and dynamic research associate 1 interested in pursuing a career in science. The chosen candidate will join Dr. Serafini’s NIH-funded translational group for projects in immunology, target discovery, and in vivo targeted delivery of therapeutics and imaging reagents. Past research associates in the position continued their work in the laboratory as Ph.D. students through the direct admission route. This is still an opportunity for the most talented individuals. The Research Associate 1, SOM, supports research activities for the assigned division by conducting laboratory experiments on assigned research projects. Moreover, the incumbent operates to advance his/her expertise through continued education, training, and research. Motivation, the ability to work in a team and independently, a good work ethic, and fast learning curve are required.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs calculations to complete research test results, collects data, and performs statistical analysis of laboratory results.
- Performs a variety of routine assays, tests, and studies.
- Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.
- Participates in the publication of significant results.
- Operates and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens or tissue cultures.
- Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice.
- Keeps abreast of current publications relative to methods, techniques, and developments within the area of research.
- Maintain animal colonies
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
- Understands and interpret research protocols and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required.
- No prior experience is required, but basic immunology and cellular biology knowledge are required.
Department Specific Functions:
• Take initiative and participate in projects evaluating the interaction between the immune system and cancer and the biology of beta cells in type 1 diabetes. • Work with mice, and have cell and molecular biology experience. • Become independent quickly and conduct experiments as directed. • Good time management and organization are required. • Lab and mice colonies maintenance.
