Job Description

Duties

  • Participates in efforts to seek and obtain funding from outside sources and forms research teams.
  • Develop information exchange technology for policymakers, planners, and citizens to maximize the goods and services provided by natural resources while minimizing environmental risks.
  • Analyzes and interprets research results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
  • Develop critical understanding of the interplay between human socio-cultural characteristics and natural resource engagement.
  • Develop fundamental and applied social science knowledge for managing complex forest and people interactions to promote healthy forests and human well-being.
  • Provide analysis to help guide policy makers and managers at all levels of government and non-governmental organizations in formulating effective and efficient management, policy, outreach , and other programs that affect public and private forests.
  • Analyze databases to identify spatial-temporal shifts in demographic patterns.
  • Improve understanding of how people influence and are influenced by natural environments.

Qualifications

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position. Candidates being considered for this research position should provide a list of publications for which you have been an author, co-author, or contributor. This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled in any of the job series listed below.
Basic Requirement for the Social Science Series (0101)
Degree: in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience that provided knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
OR
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates that I have acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
Basic Requirements for Forestry Series (0460)
Degree: Successful completion of a full four year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors or higher degree that included a major field of study in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas:
Management of Renewable Resources - study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Examples of creditable courses in this area include silviculture, forest management operations, timber management, wildland fire science or fire management, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, recreational land management, watershed management, and wildlife or range habitat management.
Forest Biology - study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Examples of creditable courses in this area include dendrology, forest ecology, silvics, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, forest soils, forest entomology, and forest pathology.
Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory - sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. Examples of creditable courses include forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, renewable natural resources inventories and analysis, and photogrammetry or remote sensing.
OR
Combination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
GS-12:
Specialized Experience: at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes ALL of the following:
(A) Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in one or more of the following areas: (1) Research designed to improve the measurement and understanding of a complex system of natural resources management issues and the associated social drivers and impacts at multiple scales, with a focus on forests and people (2) Developing critical understanding of the interplay between human socio-cultural characteristics and natural resource engagement.; (3) Developing fundamental social, economic, and biological knowledge that can be used to provide and maintain sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities and benefits.(4) Providing knowledge, strategies and tools to understand how changing land use affects environmental health and subsequently community well-being. 5) Conducting analyses of demographic shifts across multiple scales
(B) Participating in research teams of regional and/or national importance; AND
(C) Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals.
OR
A conferred Ph.D. degree (as documented on your transcripts) that includes research related to social science or forestry as applicable to the human dimensions of natural resource management, which includes: survey design and administration; economics; policy analysis; geography; recreation management; environmental planning; social equity and environmental justice; strategic foresight and environmental futures; human dimensions of natural resources; social psychology; demography; large dataset analyses; or parks, recreation, and tourism management
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
