Job Description
THE POSITION


The City of Sacramento requires all newly appointed employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Candidates seeking an accommodation from this requirement will be considered on a case-by-case basis.


To coordinate and direct recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, or other special community programs and activities in a facility or site, or to coordinate and direct a City-wide program or service in a special programming area.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED


Direction is provided by a higher-level professional or management position. Responsibilities may include the direct or indirect supervision of lower-level positions.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed:


  • Interview, select, evaluate, and oversee participants and activities related to the program.
  • Develop and coordinate fund-raising events.
  • Determine needs and priorities of neighborhoods/customers and plan programs consistent with those needs and priorities.
  • Prepare and compile materials for obtaining grant funds.
  • Coordinate and conduct part-time and seasonal recruitments.
  • Determine facility, equipment, scheduling, and staffing requirements for programs and events.
  • Make oral presentations to various groups and/or boards.
  • Provide workshop instruction and in-service training for lower-level staff.
  • Manage and operate a sports facility or a neighborhood community center.
  • Design, evaluate, and recommend continuance, modification, or cancellation of recreation, educational, child care, special events, and community service activities and programs.
  • Prepare and maintain written reports, records, and memorandums related to assigned programs or facilities.
  • Coordinate departmental activities with related activities of other departments or outside agencies and groups.
  • Provide information and referrals to the neighborhoods/customers concerning available programs, including the development and distribution of brochures, flyers, and other promotional materials.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct various recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development, youth employment, or other community service activities and programs at neighborhood recreation, sports, or community facilities.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and other agencies.
  • Supervise recreation leaders, volunteers, and other assigned personnel in activities.
  • Perform related duties as required.


Qualifications


Knowledge of:


  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Common computer software packages.
  • Organization, procedures, and operating details of the department.
  • First aid and safety practices.
  • Principles of supervision and training.
  • Recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, youth development or employment, or other community service activities, such as aquatics, sports, games, arts, crafts, dramatics, music, or other special community programs.
  • Facilities, equipment, and staffing needed to provide recreation, educational enrichment, child care, special events, or special community services to the community.


Ability To


  • Express and relate ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Read, write, and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
  • Develop program-related policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Speak before groups.
  • Keep records and prepare reports.
  • Compile and prepare grant funding request materials.
  • Organize and direct a variety of recreation, youth development or employment, educational enrichment, child care, special events, or special community service activities and programs.
  • Plan, assign, coordinate, schedule, and supervise the work of lower-level personnel.


Experience And Education


Two years of leadership experience in a recreational, educational, youth development, child care, special events, or community service setting, which included responsibilities such as organizing and providing general guidance over the activities of children, teenagers, and adults.


Successful completion of college-level courses with major course work in recreation, education, child development, or a closely related field may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis. Completion of thirty (30) semester units is equivalent to one year of experience.


PROOF OF EDUCATION


Should education be used to qualify for this position, then p roof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.


An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.


Special Qualifications


Driver License:


Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.


For child-care and elder-care positions, candidates must meet qualifications in accordance with current laws and regulations.


Assessments


If considered for appointment, candidates must:


  • Pass a tuberculosis screening test.
  • Pass a physical, criminal background check, and drug test.


Training


This position is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; completion of Mandatory Reporter training is required within two weeks of employment.

Physical Requirements


This is an active position requiring the ability to move about on foot, with frequent walking and standing; frequent starts and stops; perform simple and power grasping; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with participants and staff; visual acuity to read and record documents and make observations, intermittently, lift, carry or move equipment of 20 pounds or less.


Work Conditions


May be required to work weekends, evenings, and be on-call.


Environmental Conditions


Work may be performed indoors or outdoors with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, and pollens.


Probationary Period


Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.
