The Product Engineer Position

Sunnova Energy is searching for Product Engineer to be responsible for leading and project management technology pilots and provide hands-on technical input for product development and develop strategic insight on residential and commercial products. Provide technical insight, support and documentation as part of the business development team. This individual will evaluate new products and technologies, design microgrid applications, prepare and maintain both documentation and technology requirements for current products and as part of product development. The Product Engineer will be a team player capable of working independently and developing/supporting new product ideas. As this role will interact across departments and with external dealers/partners, the selected candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The Product Engineer should have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and exercise excellent time-management, with a structured approach to workload, a high attention to detail, and strong analytical skills

Product Engineer Responsibilities

• Creates and runs economic model analysis to optimize energy resources/sizing based on load profiles and tariff structures.
• Serves as a technical lead and actively participates in complex conceptual and detailed design, execution, development of new renewable energy projects.
• Develops an end-user understanding of how specific technology and equipment are used; documents pro/cons findings based on the end-user use cases and experiences; and provides feedback to the equipment manufacturers
• Continuously identifies, measures, follows and improves processes
• Facilitates product requirements specifications and works closely with product managers to ensure product features and functionality of new equipment and technology meet the customer/market needs
• Leads hands-on product pilot installations and market trials to evaluate new technologies and equipment. Develops and executes functional tests for new products to meet company objectives
• Maintains a solid understanding of renewable energy systems, including microgrids, distributed energy resources, local codes, system/equipment installation, operation, troubleshooting, equipment monitoring and control practices and principles; provides technical feedback during product development and launch
• Presents new product designs/recommendations to leadership for review and approvals
• Works with senior engineers to evaluate new products and technologies, design microgrid applications, and prepare and maintain technology/equipment requirement documentation. Conceives and develops concepts for new product ideas and customer use cases
• Analyzes competitor products and prepares technical product comparison reports; understands specific equipment line (for residential on-grid and off-grid operations), and equipment applications.

Minimum Requirements

• Knowledge of electric power system, microgrid control system, solar or energy storage system practices and philosophies
• B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering
• 3+ years of experience in engineering roles

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification
• Electric power system, solar energy industry and/or battery experience
• Basic marketing experience preferred

• Develop strategic insight on residential and commercial products
• Working towards technical certifications (EIT and PE)
• Strong documentation skills
• Good technical skills
• Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
• Strong communications skills (written and verbal), including the ability to deliver complex technical presentation to technical and non-technical audience
