Job Description

The Interceptor and Sensor Technology Group supports the development of advanced sensor and interceptor technologies and for use in future surveillance, missile defense and air defense systems. The Group is currently supporting programs in the development of air and space-based visible and infrared sensors and state of the art hypersonic vehicle modeling frameworks that include advanced control, guidance, and interceptor technologies for missile defense. The group is also developing and evaluating seeker and missile system technology to counter hypersonic, cruise, and ballistic missile threats. These programs cover a range of activities including prototyping of advanced electro-optical sensors and algorithms, laboratory testing and phenomenology, mission simulations and modeling, field and flight tests, and data analysis and exploitation

Full Technical Staff: Optical

The candidate will work on a variety of projects that involve EO/IR sensor and system prototyping, algorithm development, laboratory and field experimentation, and system performance analysis, modeling and simulation. The candidate should possess a strong background in optical sensor theory and hardware, phenomenology, and the software and algorithms involved in operation. The candidate should have a demonstrated ability to conduct and lead small teams in laboratory and/or field measurements; experience with using standard optical instrumentation and laboratory techniques is highly desirable. The candidate should also have a demonstrated ability to use simulation and development tools, such as MATLAB, to create models of optical systems and aerospace control systems. The candidate must have demonstrated the ability to work on a variety of technical problems, both individually and as a member of a team, and be capable of independently setting personal goals to coordinate and meet the priorities of different projects in a timely manner. A successful candidate will possess a significant amount of initiative in seeking out and creating opportunities for test and measurement efforts across a wide variety of optical sensor programs.

About Our Group

Our group works in a dynamic and collaborative environment that includes multi-disciplinary teams and analysis

Work categories include:

Role may include laboratory or field work with sensors performance measurements and investigating phenomenology, tying measurements to sensor and system needs, and developing and presenting analysis to stakeholders.

Role may include development, analysis, or evaluation of advanced sensor systems used in defense architectures for detection and tracking of ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

The candidate should have strong analytic skills and have demonstrated an ability to use industry standard simulation tools and software frameworks. Examples include: Python, MATLAB, Zemax. Prior experience on projects leveraging tools to create models, analyze data, and characterize and assess performance of systems is required. Prior experience with optics, optical sensor modelling, experimentation, or testing is desired. The candidate must have demonstrated the ability to work on a variety of technical problems, both individually and as a member of a team, and be capable of independently setting personal goals to coordinate and meet the priorities of different projects in a timely manner. A successful candidate will possess a significant amount of initiative in performing independent research and project execution setting and meeting critical milestones as well as participating in a fast paced collaborative environment. In addition, candidates with strong communication and presentation skills are desired. Opportunities for presenting and collaborating with a variety of audiences including both technical and non-technical peers and sponsors will be part of future project elements.

Requirements:

  • PhD or MS with 5 years’ experience; Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optics, Physics or Mathematics or equivalent

Desired:

  • Experience utilizing MATLAB, Python or equivalent, Zemax or equivalent optical modeling, experience with image processing and/or optical sensor modeling
