Position Description

The Superconducting Magnet Division is looking to hire a Senior Electro/Mechanical Technician with a strong background in electronic and mechanical systems. The candidate will be responsible for repairs and construction of electronic/mechanical assemblies and test fixtures. These components range in complexity from simple electronic/mechanical task to complex, including vacuum systems, cryogenic systems and magnetic measurement systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Upgrading of associated electronic equipment and systems
  • Read blueprints, schematic drawings, and engineering instructions for repair, modification, fabrication and assembly of electronic and mechanical systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and systems
  • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions
  • Write reports recording data on testing techniques, laboratory equipment, and specifications
  • Assemble chassis using electrical wiring and mechanical fabrication techniques
  • Calibrate, maintain and repair complex electronic and mechanical controls systems

Position Requirements


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
  • A technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
  • Familiarity with the use of standard test and measurement equipment, such as function generators, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and pressure standards is essential
  • Ability to repair, modify and build electrical/electronic systems from schematic drawings and assemble chassis using basic mechanical fabrication techniques
  • Clear and concise communication skills
  • 10 years relevant work experience
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
    • a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;
    • a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
    • a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
    • 10 years relevant work experience
  • A BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;
  • Relevant work experience should include calibration, maintenance and repair of complex electronic and mechanical control systems
  • Must be available to work off hours and respond to emergencies as required
  • Experience in the field of pressure, temperature, level and flow instrumentation, and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based control systems
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work with minimum supervision

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic machine shop skills
  • Analog and digital electronics, PLC Ladder Logic, Instrument sensor type & function, electric motor control

Environmental, Health and Safety Requirements
  • Must be able to work outdoors and work around rotating equipment
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at elevated heights
