Position Summary
New York Life is seeking an experienced linked benefits underwriter to lead the transition of our Asset Flex product to the Long-Term Care Underwriting department. A successful candidate for this position will be expected to learn the Asset Flex product features, standard operating procedures, underwriting guidelines, and administrative systems to successfully evaluate the mortality and morbidity risk of each applicant. Additionally, the person right for this position will be tasked with the training and development of additional staff members who will be underwriting the Asset Flex product. This candidate should be prepared to go to meetings to represent underwriting regarding the Asset Flex product and present themselves in a professional and well-spoken manner.
Responsibilities
- Answer inquiries regarding eligibility, policies, underwriting guidelines, and compliance procedures.
- Follow established protocols, underwriting guidelines, and procedures to analyze risk, ensuring decisions are consistent with corporate guidelines while maintaining a strong working knowledge of our administrative systems and productivity level established by management.
- Evaluate insurance applications with a focus on quality, timeliness, and productivity to determine whether an application should be approved, declined, or if additional information is required to evaluate risk when appropriate.
- Prepare responses to special circumstance letters to applicants, agents, and medical professionals.
- Successfully learn and transition the Asset Flex product to the Long-Term Care Underwriting department and train additional staff on specific product features, administrative systems, and guidelines for underwriting our linked benefit product.
- Complete any special projects or training and development opportunities assigned by management.
- Demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills both internally and externally, that includes use of all systems and communication within systems, appropriate wording of letters, and professional verbal communication with team members, agents, clients, and the field force.
- Effectively review and respond to appealed decisions, reinstatements, and plan change requests.
- Accurately and efficiently classify the mortality and morbidity risk for proposed insureds at the appropriate rate class based on both medical and non-medical information including analyzing and interpreting medical history from phone and in-person assessments, cognitive test scores, medical records, MIB, prescription profile results, motor vehicle reports and avocations, and financial requirements.
- Strong working knowledge of medical terminology and awareness of how various medical impairments interact and effect individual mortality and morbidity risk for the linked benefit product.

- Proficient computer and time management skills
- Strong medical and financial underwriting knowledge
- Work effectively within a team environment, as well as work independently
- Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization
- Ability to produce high volumes of work with quality results
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3+ years Life, LTC, or Linked Benefit Product underwriting experience including working with agents
- Bachelor’s Degree Preferred, BS, RN, or equivalent insurance industry experience.
- Acceptable alternatives are disability or health insurance underwriting experience
