Position Description


Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History What began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

Librarian I - Youth Programming ( South Houston Branch Library ) Overview:
This position is responsible for identifying and interpreting user needs; planning and implementing a variety of youth programs to encourage library usage and to foster community relations; providing exceptional customer service, reference, and readers' advisory; and assisting Library patrons in the use of library services, facilities, and equipment. Exemplify the high standards and expectations for the library system in its daily operations and services.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • Management may, at its discretion, assign, or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.
  • Attends Staff meetings, activities, and/or professional conferences and actively serves on committees
  • Coordinates branch volunteers
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of the library collection through awareness of current youth literature

  • Implements knowledge of current library trends in youth services and programs
  • Plan, coordinate, and promote youth services and programs, including summer reading, special projects and other special events

  • Identify information needs in the community and plans and provides services to meet these needs
  • Develop a highly-visible public relations program for youth services in the community
  • Provides reader's advisory and reference services

Education & Experience:
  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited university
    • Consideration will be given to individuals currently pursuing a master’s degree in Library Science and will be completing the degree within the next four (4) months.
    • Proof of completion of the degree will be required for permanent status in the position.

  • One (1) year of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for youth

  • Two (2) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
  • Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for youth
OR
  • Four (4) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
  • Four (4) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for youth
  • Associates degree in any field or 60 hours of secondary education credits from an accredited college or university
OR
  • Six (6) years of full-time customer service experience showing empathy, good communication, and problem-solving.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Six (6) years of full-time experience designing, planning, and making educational activities for youth

  • Ability to work well with public and staff members

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • This job typically operates in a professional office environment.
  • At times, work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.

Physical Demands:
  • Some duties would require the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
