DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A successful Librarian I will be responsible for providing customer assistance to find information and library materials, have a strong working knowledge of electronic devices such as e-readers and tablets and other technologies needed for library services, and promote library services and programs in the community. The Librarian I may serve as the person in charge in the absence of the manager and assistant manager and will work evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sundays) on a rotating basis.
Additional youth duties include:
- Create a welcoming, safe environment for youth and their caregivers in the library.
- Enjoy working with youth and create quality experiences for them and their families.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Develop and nurture strong collaborative relationships with schools and other the local community groups.
- Cooperatively design, plan and execute innovative services and virtual programming for youth of all ages including early literacy programs, crafts, after school programming and book clubs.
- Display thorough knowledge of youth literature and resources.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.
OR
Requires a Bachelor's degree plus 18 hours toward a Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and one (1) year of professional library experience. A Master of Library Science must be completed within two years from being hired into this classification.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS - None
- Strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Experience in library programming
- Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred.
- Ability to motivate, develop, train and direct staff in a collaborative team environment.
- Comfortable working with diverse populations.
- Experience using the MS Office Suite and knowledge of electronic devices such as e-readers and tablets and other technologies.
- Knowledge of current trends in library services to youth and their parents and caregivers.

Department may administer skills assessment test.

SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
