Job Description
Under general direction of the HR Manager, we are seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS) by managing a variety of high level complex human resources responsibilities in support of the school's faculty, staff, and student employees. The HR Generalist functions as a HR client services partner and is responsible for developing key partnerships with leaders in departments, the school, and the university to maintain consistency with the overall strategy, commitments, and goals of the school and Human Resources.
The HR Generalist supports assigned departments by delivering HR services that are aligned with the needs of the unit. This position requires a high level of independent judgment in providing a wide range of independent HR support that includes, but is not limited to workforce planning, classification and compensation administration, training and development, performance management, talent acquisition, HR analytics, leave management, and diversity.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Recruitment & Employment
Oversees searches for assigned units and serves as their KSAS HR point of contact. Assists with obtaining approvals, reviewing, drafting, and submitting job descriptions, making recommendations on external advertisements, salary analysis, and management of the school's applicant tracking system. Represents the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences by playing an active role in the talent acquisition process along with the hiring manager, and University's Talent Acquisition team.
Assists with reviewing, writing and/or editing job descriptions, essential functions, and advertisements to ensure compliance with the University, and federal & state employment practices.
Works closely with HR, Finance, and departmental hiring team to determine equitable salaries.
Finalizes salaries and any other offer contingencies with the HR Manager and/or HR Director.
Partners with the hiring managers on new hire onboarding schedules for employee's first week.
Follows up and advises hiring manager on employee's progress at 30, 60, 90, and 120-day intervals
Actively participates in the development and implementation of staff recruitment protocols and training that ensures uniformity across the school on best recruitment practices.
Consults with managers and supervisors to assess staffing needs and assist them in developing requisitions and recruitment strategies.
Interviews and screens staff applicants as needed, provide interview training and coordinate searches with recruiter, hiring departments and search committees.
Workforce Planning
Participates in the workforce planning process as directed by the HR Manager. Assists with gathering job descriptions, conducting position reviews, and analyzing/updating organizational structures.
Assists with the reclassification process for the college by reviewing submissions from supervisors, making necessary changes, and ensuring all documents are received and support the request and submit to the HR Manager for review.
Leave Administration
Serves as the initial point of contact for all FML requests
Drafts FML paperwork in accordance with Federal and State policies.
Communicates with leave administration team to confirm where request are in the process and if additional information is needed.
Assures efficient and consistent compliance with University, Federal, State policies and guidelines in administering various types of leave such as FML, short-term and long-term leave.
Employee Relations
Works closely with HR Manager, and supervisors to provide support and management of employee relations issues.
Assists departments and supervisors with guidance during the introductory period.
Conducts stay and exit interviews and provide quality improvement feedback and recommendations to the HR Manager when appropriate.
Assists managers/supervisors in the performance management process by reviewing finalized reports for compliance with internal employment guidelines and objectivity and notifying HR Manager of employees who receive poor performance reviews. Work with supervisors on corrective actions and appropriate training.
Acts as consultant/contact/liaison for faculty, staff and management on HR issues including personnel practices and University policy, employee relations, compensation, training, recruitment and benefits. Partners with HR Manager or Director as needed.
Assists in managing workplace concerns/complaints by investigating and gathering information.
General
Administers JHU's staff polices and processes for KSAS; maintain appropriate employment records for the school.
Serves as a backup to other HR Generalists within KSAS.
Coordinates and/or implements KSAS training and development courses.
Partners with the KSAS HR Operations team to notify them of changes and ensure HR related transactions are completed.
Researches, analyzes and evaluates data from a variety of systems to prepare complex HR reports.
May initiate equity and retention tactics.
May lead project/process improvement and change.
Serves as a champion for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Experience with SAP or other enterprise resource planning software.
Familiarity with Interfolio or other applicant tracking software.
Knowledge of employment laws (including FLSA, FMLA), recruiting procedures, compensation practices, personnel reporting and record keeping as well as employee relations required
Knowledge of benefits administration and immigration regulations strongly desired.
Most have proficiency working with the internet, databases and spreadsheets, as well as work processing and electronic mail.
Strong consulting, negotiating, and mediation skills needed to be able to provide appropriate counsel and resolve conflict.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to effectively interact and work collaboratively with all levels of university employees.
Creativity and resourcefulness needed to be able to handle various HR issues and concerns effectively while maintaining confidentiality.
Strong organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
Ability to anticipate needs and follow through.
Must be able to multi-task effectively and to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines.
Must demonstrate good judgment, strong initiative and energy as well as a team focus.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or other related field.
Three years of progressive experience in a professional human resources capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
Five (5) or more years of related experience strongly preferred.
Prior JHU experience, or experience in higher education is preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
