Position Description


Calico is seeking an exceptional and experienced Head of Business Development. The successful candidate will be a senior leader within Calico and will lead our Business Development group in their work to actively source and evaluate promising new opportunities, make portfolio recommendations to Calico leadership and negotiate agreements to support Calico’s partnerships and collaboration activities.


Specific Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders and external partners
  • Lead and manage scientific and strategic assessments and cross-functional due diligence reviews
  • Source new opportunities that are consistent with the company’s scientific and business objectives
  • Monitor and provide internal stakeholders with updates on the external deal environment and competitive landscape for portfolio projects
  • Drive decision-making through the deal process, and making presentations and recommendations to senior leadership
  • Lead and be accountable for all aspects of the Business Development function and team, including search, evaluation, and transaction
  • Recruit, manage and develop the Business Development team
  • Develop and recommend proposed deal structures, financial terms and financial analysis to senior leadership, and lead negotiations of term sheets and contracts with potential partners in collaboration with Legal and Finance
  • In partnership with Calico’s senior and R&D leadership, help define areas of interest and develop and lead the Business Development group’s short and long term corporate partnership goals for those areas and be responsible for execution against those goals
  • Lead the department by developing the tools and processes used to track opportunities
  • Define and report Business Development metrics


Position Requirements


  • Proven ability to lead teams, drive business decisions, and manage multiple projects effectively in an intense environment with a high degree of independence
  • Good business instincts and fluency with business analytics and valuation methodologies
  • Deep understanding of the drug discovery, development and commercialization process, and demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with R&D leadership; knowledge of age-related diseases and partnering landscape is a plus
  • Must be willing to work onsite at least three days per week
  • Outstanding oral and written communication, interpersonal, influence and negotiation skills
  • Energetic, result-driven, self-starter with a strong executive presence, collaborative mindset, and ability to think strategically and analytically
  • At least 10 years of business development or licensing experience with a track record of leading and successfully completing deals; experience with preclinical and early clinical development therapeutic opportunities preferred
  • Either a Ph.D. or MD, combined with an MBA or JD or equivalent level of business education and experience
  • Skillful presenter of scientific and business topics to executives


The estimated base salary range for this role is $298,000 - $313,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
