Job Description
Great opportunity for a Fisheries Biologist to support our Watershed Sciences Lab in Boise, ID. This position will focus on stream assessment, fish surveys, and restoration monitoring. The Fisheries Biologist provides support for the organization by conducting field work, data collection, data and GIS analysis, literature reviews, reporting, and problem solving for our clients. This position will be roughly 60% office time and 40% field time, with most of the field work occurring in the summer.
Company Overview: Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is a fisheries research, habitat management, and restoration consulting firm that serves clients throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. Our mission is to rigorously apply the scientific method to afford our clients innovative and scientifically robust solutions to address a variety of fisheries and environmental challenges.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Effectively manage multiple project deadlines and tasks and communicate with Project Managers
  • Work alone and as part of a team to collect, record, analyze, and report high-quality stream restoration monitoring and assessment data.
  • Manage field logistics, including purchasing and maintaining equipment and supplies and all aspects of planning (e.g., food and lodging, contacting stakeholders and landowners, gear preparation).
  • Collect, analyze, process, and map spatial data using GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS).
  • Write annual project reports including data summaries and analysis, following guidelines from Project Managers.
  • Train and provide guidance to Technicians to support completion of project deliverables.
  • Conduct literature reviews and data gathering for a variety of projects.
  • Lead and/or perform fieldwork, which may include stream and/or nearshore habitat surveys, river and/or nearshore restoration effectiveness monitoring, electrofishing, fish tagging and trapping, and snorkel surveys.
  • Manage, analyze, and share data using GIS, R, and other statistical packages.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Team Leadership Skills: Contribute to the team and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture, view all team members as important and treat them with respect and professionalism. Hold high personal performance and quality standards to enable the team to be successful. Collaborate with other team members and mentor Technicians.
  • Fisheries Science and/or Restoration Expertise: Practical understanding of salmon ecology and habitat restoration. Knowledge and experience in the identification of salmon and other stream fishes and in conducting stream habitat and topographic surveys in Pacific Northwest streams.
  • Project Management Skills: Serve as Task Lead on several projects and delegate and train technicians as necessary to complete tasks. Complete required products/reports for projects on time and within budget.
  • Science-Business balance. This individual should demonstrate expertise in and be passionate about science, natural resources, and resolving complex fishery problems. In addition, the individual should understand consulting work and billable targets to support CFS as a profitable business.
Education/Minimum Qualifications
  • Competent with GIS (QGIS or ArcGIS) spatial data processing and mapping.
  • Bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology or an equivalent science field and at least 1 year of related experience or Master's degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology.
  • Demonstrated skills in data collection, entry, and analysis; developing graphs and maps; and communicating project methods and findings in presentations and reports.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to track, manage, and prioritize workload and clearly communicate progress and status of tasks to project managers.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience leading, training, and supervising field crews to conduct stream habitat and snorkel surveys.
  • Experience surveying and mapping stream channels with Total Station, RTK GPS, and other surveying equipment.
  • Experience collecting aerial imagery with a drone.
  • Experience with programming and statistical analysis (R, Python).
  • Experience conducting stream habitat and snorkel surveys using CHaMP, EMAP, ODFW, PIBO, or similar protocols.
  • Experience operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, boats, trailers, and other field equipment.
Working Conditions And Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Working irregular hours (including weekends and evenings).
  • Travel to remote areas to conduct field work for 3 to 12 days at a time.
  • Must be comfortable working in aquatic environments including wading, snorkeling, swimming, and boating in small and large rivers, streams, lakes, and estuaries.
  • Must be able to walk long distances and across a variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces.
  • Must have visual acuity, clear speech, and keen hearing.

  • Ability to complete and/or delegate work assigned by Senior Scientists in a timely manner.
Compensation: $57,000 - $77,000/year (depending upon experience). 401 (k) has a 3% match and full vesting after one year. The annual cash bonus has a 3% target. Benefit package includes: medical, dental, vision, basic life, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, employee assistance programs, and other voluntary benefits. Generous paid time off plan includes 15 days during the first 12 months, plus 7 paid holidays and 3 paid floating holidays.
ESOP: CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
