Energy Engineer, North America


The Energy Engineer is a key member of the Utilities Center of Excellence (UCoE) team providing technical expertise, planning, and coordination to ADM’s largest concentration of significant energy users. This role is pivotal to ADM achieving energy intensity, utility cost reduction, and greenhouse gas reduction goals. They will coordinate closely with multiple internal stakeholders and external resources to drive a diverse portfolio of energy intensity reduction projects through all phases from inception to realization. The Energy Engineer serves as an energy efficiency subject matter expert in for multiple business units helping to guide the organization’s energy intensity and reduction actions in the region. The Energy Engineer must build a working knowledge of the impacts of energy on production and quality in multiple process types.


Responsibilities of the Energy Engineer include, but are not limited to:


  • Develop Business Goals: Directly advise and support Operations Management in establishing and achieving long term cost effective energy goals. Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to develop and achieve energy reduction and efficiency targets.
  • The Energy Engineer must be personally committed to working safely and maintaining a safe work environment. They must have and employ independent judgement and strong problem-solving skills. The Energy Engineer must work effectively as part of a team and independently with strong interpersonal skills and excellent written/verbal communication.
  • Lead: Mentor, train and inspire stakeholders to achieve energy intensity reduction across the portfolio. Be recognized as a leader/Subject Matter Expert in energy intensity reduction planning and engineering in North America.
  • Evaluate Opportunities: Key advisor in the procurement of complex energy efficiency and renewable energy contracts. Lead aspects of technical review, financial evaluation, risk management, and post contract execution management.
  • Manage Multiple Project Portfolios: Lead the identification and execution of energy projects from inception to completion. Communication these efforts with stakeholders, obtain buy-in and ensure alignment in all project phases.
  • Drive Project Execution: Provide SME support to Project Managers and Engineers in the execution of energy intensity reduction projects. Lead aspects of data collection, engineering, financial, and technical analysis to support project approval and execution.
Skills Requirements


  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines and to be effective in on-site work environments.
  • Current International Certification as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or ability to obtain within 2 Years. Minimum 3+ years energy engineering/management experience
  • Proven ability to lead, educate, and train engineers and analysts in energy conservation studies and design efforts.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to focus on the big picture while also having the ability to identify and analyze details that are critical to project outcomes.
  • Ability to independently solve difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Bachelor of Science in engineering with Masters/MBA preferred,
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT).
  • Ability to travel up to 25% within Region
  • Working knowledge and experience in developing, designing, and implementing energy efficiency projects related to steam, hot water, natural gas, electricity, waste heat recovery, chilling and general process equipment.
  • Ability to manage a diverse portfolio of work, including identification of critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a process manufacturing setting ideally with a demonstrated track record of achievement in operations management, process optimization and project management.
The location for this role is in Decatur, IL region and will have responsibilities throughout the North America Region. Relocation assistance is available. The role does require approximately 25% travel throughout North America.
