Job Description
Director, People Operations
Flexible location

TNTP seeks a full-time Director for our People Operations team on our Central Operations Division. This position is based in a home office anywhere in the U.S. and is available immediately. Travel for team and organizational meetings is required a few times a year (depending on current state and federal guidance).

Who We Are
A national nonprofit founded by teachers, TNTP believes our nation’s public schools can offer all children an excellent education. Today we’re a diverse team from a wide range of fields, united by a fierce commitment to helping school systems end educational inequality. We work from home and in schools and communities at every level of the public education system in nearly every state to attract and train talented teachers and school leaders, ensure rigorous and engaging classrooms, and create environments that prioritize great teaching and accelerate student learning.

This director oversees a team that delivers core performance and lifecycle operations services and partnership to support our most important asset: our people. Specifically, this team ensures that the organization operates in compliance and with efficiency as a multi-state employer, and that the performance management operations support and advance the organization’s sustainability and equity goals. We use Workday to support the core services we provide to employees, and it is a critical factor in the quality and efficiency of our work.

What You’ll Do
As a Director, People Operations you will oversee human resources employee lifecycle operation and the development, implementation, and administration of processes that evaluate, measure, enhance and improve employee performance. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Managing a small team that focuses on employee lifecycle processes and policies
  • Oversees employee relations concerns, including allegations of policy violations
  • Designs and manages performance management strategies and processes, including goal setting, feedback and performance reviews to ensure that staff and managers have the tools they need to be successful in their jobs
  • Maintains broad and current subject matter knowledge and expertise in federal and state employment laws to ensure compliance and advise with solutions for human resources issues and evolving organizational needs
  • Closely collaborates with other HR teams, including Total Rewards, Workforce, Organizational Learning and Development

What You Bring:
We are looking for amazing people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences, are inspired by our mission and are highly motivated to change children’s lives through education. You’ll be right at home here if you learn from failure and overcome adversity, cultivate strong relationships, understand the power of diversity, advocate for equity, aspire to lead through inclusion, and push yourself, your work and the people around you to the next level.

We expect our Director, People Operations to:
  • Model cross-cultural agility. Authentic self-reflection, self-awareness, and high emotional intelligence are central to who you are as a leader, and you utilize these skills to shape a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. You have an adept cultural understanding of yourself and use your understanding of yourself and others to build trusting relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Motivate and influence others to act. You are as comfortable advising members of our Leadership and Management Teams as you are working with your team. You authentically collaborate, develop, and manage high-level relationships that build investment in our people operations strategy. You bring out the best in your team while coaching and developing others.
  • Have a deep commitment to designing equitable HR and performance management practices. You are well-versed and passionate about the most current, equity-centered approaches to employee lifecycle and performance management operations.
  • Be a natural problem solver. You are someone who doesn’t get stuck when there is not a clear path laid out. You’ll use your analytical, process- and people-oriented skills to quickly identify challenges, analyze root causes, propose and operationalize solutions to support TNTP’s evolving needs.

Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of experience leading an HR function including performance management or employee relations
  • Exceptional judgment and ability to lead equitable employee relations
  • Experience using Workday strongly preferred
  • Strong HR lifecycle process design and implementation skills
  • Advanced knowledge of employment law, preferably for a multi-state employer
What We Offer
TNTP offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience in a similar position with the potential for an annual performance-based bonus. The salary range for this position is $100,000-$150,000. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. We offer a comprehensive benefits plan, covering the majority of the employee premium for the base medical plan and subsidizing the majority of costs for a spouse/domestic partner and children. Other benefits include dental and vision plans, disability, life insurance, parenting benefits, flexible spending account options, generous vacation time, commuter benefits, referral bonuses, professional development, and a 403(b) plan. We also offer an inclusive environment where staff are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work every day. TNTP may offer a relocation stipend to defray the cost of moving for this role, if applicable.

It’s in your best interest to apply as soon as possible. We recommend including a cover letter in your application addressing why you are interested in TNTP and how your experience has prepared you for this position.
