Job Description
Position Overview:
As the Director of Officials for the United States Hockey League (USHL), you will play a pivotal role in the recruitment, training, assigning, and continuing education of the USHL’s Officiating Staff. Your leadership and expertise will be critical in maintaining the league's high standards for officiating while providing a competitive and safe environment for players, coaches, and fans. As the Director of Officials, you will oversee and manage the entire officiating program, collaborating closely with league administrators, coaches, general managers, Officials and the leadership of USA Hockey’s Advanced Officiating Development Program.
Responsibilities:
Officiating Program Leadership:
  • Develop, implement, and continually improve the league's officiating program in partnership with the USA Hockey Advanced Officiating Program (AODP) to ensure the highest level of quality and consistency in officiating standards.
  • Establish clear performance goals and guidelines for referees and linesmen, promoting a culture of accountability and professionalism.
  • Interact with other USA Hockey Leagues in the furtherance of these efforts.
Recruitment and Development:
  • Attend and participate in both the AODP Prospects Camp and full-time pre-season Training Camp for full-time AODP Officials.
  • Recruit, hire, and train qualified referees and linesmen in conjunction with the AODP to officiate USHL games at the highest level of competence and integrity.
  • Work closely with the AODP to schedule AODP Officiating Coaches to USHL games.
  • Support the AODP’s mission to develop officials with the goal of advancement to higher levels of officiating.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and create development plans to enhance the skills of officiating personnel.

Rules Interpretation and Enforcement:
  • Conduct workshops to educate officials and team personnel on rule changes, standard of play and points of emphasis.
  • Be knowledgeable of USA Hockey and USHL Playing Rules & policies, ensuring that all officials are competent in applying them correctly during games.
Officiating Assignments and Scheduling:
  • Collaborate with league operations staff and USA Hockey AODP Staff in the assignment of officials for all USHL games based on experience, performance, and logical travel considerations.
  • Develop knowledge of the officiating staff in order to best match officials in the 4-man system.
Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Monitor game officiating performances and conduct post-game reviews to evaluate the quality of officiating and identify areas for improvement.
  • Compile and present regular reports to league executives and USA Hockey AODP on officiating performance, trends, and any necessary actions.
Conflict Resolution:
  • Address and resolve any disputes or complaints related to officiating, working closely with teams, coaches, and league management to reach fair and impartial resolutions.
Officiating Program Budget:
  • Develop and manage the officiating program's budget in coordination with USA Hockey, ensuring efficient allocation of resources while maintaining a high level of quality.
Officiating Community Engagement:
  • Foster positive relationships with officiating organizations, schools, and USA Hockey Affiliates to promote the growth of officiating talent and support recruitment efforts.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in sports management, sports administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • Proficiency in using officiating-related technologies and tools.
  • Extensive experience in hockey officiating at a high level, with a comprehensive understanding of the game's rules and regulations.
  • Availability to travel frequently, as required, for game assignments, training, recruiting events, USA Hockey National Camps, and league events.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse officiating community.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including coaches, players, league executives, and USA Hockey
  • Experience in hockey operations at the Junior or professional level is a plus.
Though on-ice officiating experience is desired, candidates would be expected to be available on weekends and not able to officiate higher levels of hockey.
