The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations, social media and content, colleague communications and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
This NYC-based position will be an integral member of the CA&C team supporting the American Express Global Advertising and Brand Management (GABM) division. The mission of the GABM team is to create marketplace demand and drive commerce for American Express through differentiated and innovative products, partnerships, and marketing and customer experiences.
The Director of GABM Communications will be part of a team responsible for building American Express’ brand narrative, and communicating with colleagues, journalists, community groups and other thought leaders. Specifically, we are looking for a seasoned PR professional with a passion for the American Express brand, an understanding of the media and marketing environment, a collaborative attitude, and the ability to think creatively and drive results.
This role will report to the U.S. based vice president, Corporate Affairs & Communications, and work closely with the U.S.based manager, Corporate Affairs & Communications.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement communications strategies, approaches, and content; including clear and concise writing tailored to relevant audiences and channels. Communications initiatives will support GABM priorities, including Shop Small/Small Business Saturday, marketing innovation, brand sponsorships across music and sports, and entertainment and venue access programs.
- Lead the development of materials across external and internal communications including internal memos, messaging, talking points, Q&As, press releases, and visual content.
- Take a data-driven approach to communications and measure and report on impact, including key learnings and areas of opportunity.
- Develop strong relationships with press and industry stakeholders to promote GABM initiatives and represent Amex as a spokesperson when responding to media inquiries.
- Support GABM leaders communications needs, across conferences, speaking engagements, award submissions and media interviews.
- Manage select senior executives’ LinkedIn presence, including advising on the right content for the channel and writing copy to amplify announcements and company news.
- Provide counsel to protect and enhance the Brand.
- Remain up-to-date with emerging platforms, trends, competitor news, and best practices across brand marketing, digital marketing and social media, and regularly share your perspective to keep the team informed.
- Help oversee and manage U.S. based PR agency.
Qualifications:
- 7-10 years of public relations experience, with established ability to influence and counsel internal and external stakeholders and apply strong judgement while managing multiple priorities and a deadline-driven work environment.
- Strong writing skills, media relationships skills
- Strong organization and attention to detail.
- Strong strategic and creative thinking with proven experience leading winning communications strategies and plans.
- Experience counseling executives and driving their external and internal communications needs.
- Proven track record for developing and executing programs that have driven tangible results.
- You thrive in a fluid, fast-paced environment and can manage multiple priorities and think and act on your feet.
- Creative and have experience leading and working with agency and creative teams to build effective communications strategies and campaigns.
- Proven experience in managing PR agencies and/or teams; agency experience a plus.
- Needs to be a self-starter, strong collaborator, good project manager, and able to work independently, while operating as an adaptable team player.

- Location: Hybrid (approx. 2 days/week) at 200 Vesey Street, New York, NY
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
