Summary:
The Director Global Payroll is responsible for managing our global payroll process. This position will lead the global payroll function and will provide the visionary and strategic direction of our US and international payroll processes and operations. This role will also assist in building a global system utilizing standard comprehensive procedures. The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership skills in identifying and implementing payroll process improvements and strong project management skills to coordinate the planning, implementation, and administration of programs.
This role will require establishing an excellent working relationship with our two payroll vendors to develop, adjust, and enhance payroll systems and procedures due to changes in tax laws, regulations, and our pay policies/compensation initiatives. This position will foster relationships with internal stakeholders such as Tax, Legal, Finance, IT, Total Rewards, as well as with our external vendors.

This role is ideally suited for someone with the ability to lead and manage vendors as they process payroll globally, influence and effectively communicate cross-functionally in a fast-paced, growing, and ever-changing environment. This position will also ensure timely and high-value customer service to employees, including developing and adhering to established service level agreements and providing research and responses that are thorough.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Year-End: Manage the annual preparation and delivery of yearly forms as required within the jurisdictions.
  • Compliance: Review all payroll reporting and ensure accurate and timely filing with appropriate government authorities. Support external financial audits. Manage and integrate/liaise for any payroll related audits, e.g., benefits reviews, workers' compensation, employee leave, etc.
  • Payroll Processing & Controls: Ensure proper reviews are in place for payroll output from payroll vendor. This includes ensuring all payroll inputs are accurately captured. Includes but not limited to performing payroll analysis such as total gross payroll to net payment, the average paid per headcount by country, and comparison of report to the prior period, etc.
  • Third parties: Manage third-party vendors (including international payroll providers and PEOs) and the preparation, analysis, and maintenance of all payroll related reports, including governmental and regulatory filings. Liaise with internal People teams (People Operations, Total Rewards, People Business Partners, etc.
  • Payroll & Benefits: Manage the US and International payroll processing (currently one team member focusing on US Payroll that reports into this position), compliance and work closely with the payroll vendors and accountants on various accounting activities, including exempt and non-exempt payrolls, monthly/quarterly accounting close activities, account maintenance, and reconciliations, financial reporting and variance analysis. Coordination and integration with the Total Rewards team to ensure accurate program administration and integration with payroll globally. Overall management and analysis of payroll operations and related activities that ensure compliance with US and international jurisdictions for 1,500 employees and growing.
  • Special Projects: Provide ad-hoc support and services as needed.
  • Employee experience: Respond to employee inquiries and serve as a liaison between employee and third-party providers, and internal People teams (People Operations, Total Rewards, People Business Partners, etc.; educate and counsel employees on how to use self-service tools and integrate/liaise inter-departmentally to address issues that fall outside the scope of self-service, including leaves of absence, benefits changes, hourly time tracking and overtime
  • Cross-functional partnerships: Work with internal partners in People Team/Talent Acquisition/Total Rewards, Strategic Finance/ Legal to facilitate and improve the payroll processes, including compensation and benefit plans and withholdings (e.g., employee benefits, allowances, retirement and leave balances, flexible spending accounts, etc.). Liaise with internal People teams (People Operations, Total Rewards, People Business Partners, etc.) to ensure accurate data, integration, and best employee experience.
  • Payroll Policies and procedures: Develop and implement payroll processes, policies, and procedures to ensure proper internal controls, efficiency, and excellent employee experience. Document policies and procedures on the internal Confluence page.
  • General ledger: Ensure all payroll activities are posted to the general ledger, and payroll accounts are reconciled timely and accurately, including month-end, year-end, and bonus, commissions, retirement benefits, and PTO accruals
Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of the payroll-related country, province, state, legal, tax, and compliance requirements.
  • Advanced level experience with Workday (or equivalent ERP), ActivPayroll and/or OneSource Virtual payroll vendors, and Excel (think pivot tables and lookups)
  • Experience with global payroll system implementation.
  • Strong understanding of global payroll processes, best practices, and integration points with other internal Rocket departments. Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • 10+ years global payroll experience.
  • Passionate leader who wants to build out the global payroll process.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills needed to interface and establish rapport with all levels of the organization, including executive team members.

Education:

BS degree or equivalent. Chartered Accountant or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation strongly preferred
The base salary range for this role is $153,777.00 - $192,221.50 /year. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
