Position description
The Department of Medicine (http://med.ucsd.edu) and the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of California, San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and seek Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientists for the Division of Gastroenterology.
The successful candidates will be responsible for the design and engineering of native/undomesticated bacteria using a variety of strategies to optimally express specific phenotypes and recombinant proteins. Successful candidates will also conduct experiments to characterize the in vitro and, with assistance, in vivo properties of constructed bacterial strains.
The successful candidates will propose and prioritize the next steps for strain improvement and systematically troubleshoot technical hurdles, constructively contribute ideas, suggestions, and insights at project meetings and/or ad hoc regarding functional gut microbiome manipulation. As appropriate, the successful candidates will identify, pursue, and implement new technologies to support and expand internal capabilities.
The successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining accurate and detailed records of experimental design and methods as well as experimental results. In addition, communicating and teaching complex bioengineering approaches/strategies to researchers in the laboratory.
The appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience.

Qualifications
Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or PhD in bacterial genetics, microbiology, synthetic biology, or a relevant field.
Candidates must have experience in recombinant gene expression in bacteria, proficiency in cloning/plasmid construction, and bacterial strain construction. Candidates must also have experience with handling BSL-2 bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, and sterile techniques.
Candidates with experience in the development and performance of biochemical and mammalian/bacterial cell-based assays are preferred. Candidates with 3+ years of experience in relevant bacterial genetics/microbiology/synthetic biology field(s) are also preferred.
