Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Geological Project Scientist to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will work on surface-wave tomography, body-wave tomography, and detection of microearthquakes and estimation of source parameters using distributed acoustic sensing array data.
What You Will Do:
- Picking of body-wave arrivals:
- Develop methodologies for determining earthquake magnitude, location, and focal mechanisms.
- Participate in field surveys and data collection to ensure high-quality data acquisition.
- Detection of microseismic using distributed acoustic sensing data:
- Apply signal processing techniques to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and improve correlation results.
- Interpret and visualize tomographic results to gain insights into subsurface geophysical properties.
- Conduct cross-correlation analysis of ambient noise data to extract valuable seismic information.
- Implement machine learning techniques to accurately identify and extract body-wave arrival times.
- Collaborate with seismologists and geophysicists to analyze earthquake data and contribute to research.
- Assistance in data acquisition and fieldwork:
- Body-wave and surface-wave tomography:
- Ambient noise analysis:
- Assist in the deployment and retrieval of seismic sensors in the field.
- Test and validate automated picking methods to ensure robustness and reliability.
- Interpret and analyze the correlated data to infer subsurface properties and structures.
- Develop algorithms and software for automating the process of picking body-wave arrivals from seismic data.
- Develop inversion algorithms to reconstruct velocity models from seismic data.
- Support the team in data acquisition campaigns by setting up and maintaining seismic instruments.
- Conduct tomographic imaging of the Earth's interior using body-waves and surface-waves.
- Utilize data from distributed acoustic sensing arrays to estimate earthquake source parameters.
What is Required:
- Minimum of 2 years work experience with fiber-optics sensing.
- Good understanding of seismic moment tensor analysis of micro-earthquakes.
- Ability to process distributed acoustic sensing data.
- Ph.D. (or equivalent work experience) in geophysics or related fields.
- Programming in Matlab and Python.
Notes:
- For full consideration, please apply by August 16th, 2023.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
