Job Description

Summary

The Vice President of Sports is responsible for creating and implementing an overall comprehensive sports plan for local, regional, state, national, and world level events. This includes, but is not limited to, the selection of sports offered as well as trainings of coaches, athletes, officials, and volunteers.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop an annual budget for regional, state, national, and world games competitions.
  • Submit annual Census Report to Special Olympics International (SOI).
  • Work to develop new initiatives for diversity in coaching, committee members, and volunteers by developing meaningful relationships with diverse and underserved communities.
  • Oversee SOTN’s participation in USA Games, World Games and national and regional events.
  • Create and implement state-wide coaches training plan.
  • Work directly with the Executive Vice President (EVP) to provide support for delegations participating at state, regional, national, and world games, including registration processing (GMS), credentialing, housing, meals services, games information and communication, travel support, and other onsite support needs.
  • Work with the Director of Competitions and Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) to create and implement an overall quality sports experience at local, district, regional, and state competitions.
  • Become proficient with the Special Olympics Games Management System (GMS), including collecting and entering data, setting up games, and creating and managing relevant reporting.
  • Work with EVP to implement local sports programming with Tennessee’s 36 Area Programs.
  • Collaborate with Special Olympics North America (SONA), Special Olympics International (SOI), TSSAA, and National Governing Bodies on sport development, implementation, and communication.
  • Maintain and create clear communication and strong collaborations with NGB’s (National Sports Federations).
  • Evaluate all sports activities on state and local level including traditional and Unified Sports, Fitness, and TSSAA programs and events and ensure all competitions are held to Special Olympics standards policies and procedures.

Additional Duties

  • Provide oversight and support for local area programs with event management training, visits to local events, and monthly calls.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Executive VP or President & CEO.
  • Support the development of the Unified Champion Schools Program (UCS).
  • Represent SOTN by speaking to service clubs and other community groups when needed.
  • Responsible for developing new sports opportunities for Special Olympics Tennessee athletes and partners.
  • Support and assist with Healthy Athletes, Young Athletes, Special Events, Fundraising and Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) events as needed.
  • Provide support to area programs as needed to ensure the successful delivery of services to the athletes, families, and volunteers.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Work experience to include two (2) years of experience in volunteer/staff management.
  • Paid and/or volunteer experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) preferred.
  • Two (2) years of Special Olympics experience preferred.
  • Eight to ten (8-10) years of experience in recreation, sports management, and/or event management

Skills and/or Abilities

  • Ability to build effective relationships with a variety of organizations.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and manage volunteers.
  • Willing to travel and to work evenings and weekends to meet job requirements.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively
  • Must pass a criminal background screening and submit to a random drug screening.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Have a valid Tennessee driver’s license and meet minimum Tennessee vehicle insurance requirements.
  • Proficient in using relevant technology, including Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and database systems.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and in stressful situations.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
