Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

The VP of Retail Operations plans, directs, controls, and evaluates the activities of assigned Donated Goods Retail (DGR) departments to ensure that the enterprise achieves revenue and expense budgets and operates efficiently and effectively in accordance with Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area, Inc. (GIGCA) policies. They will develop the management team; support mission integration; maintain financial viability; carry out the Mission Statement of GIGCA.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Store Operations

  • Maintain agency, employee, and participants confidentiality. Violation of confidentiality may be cause for termination.
  • Through words and actions support Chattanooga Goodwills Mission, Vision, and Values; furthermore, actions and decisions will align with organizational guiding principles.
  • Pursues, develops, and maintains an adequate supply of donations from area businesses and the public.
  • Ensure subordinate management personnel are given the tools necessary to meet expectations for which they are held accountable.
  • Ensure routine exterior inspections of assigned areas of responsibility in areas such as building exterior and parking lot, windows, doors, sidewalks, parking lot lights, dumpster area, landscape, shopping cart retrieval, store entry, and signage. Submit maintenance work orders when appropriate.
  • Assists in identifying potential ADC and retail sites; contacts owners/managers and negotiates contracts if/as assigned by the COO and/or President/CEO.
  • Direct through subordinate management personnel, compliance of workers with established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ensure routine inspections of assigned areas of responsibility are consistently met in areas such as floor appearance, cleanliness, and shopping environment etc., Ensure facilities, equipment and tools are in proper working order. Submit maintenance work orders when they are not.
  • Ensure assigned store locations meet or exceed sales goals on a consistent basis.
  • High energy with an entrepreneurial spirit and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to balance strategic thinking and hands-on attention to detail.
  • Other related duties as assigned which may include but is not limited to:
    • Pursues, develops, and maintains an adequate supply of donations from area businesses and the public.
  • Exceptional skills in analysis and decision making; oral and written communications; and financial planning and management.
  • In coordination with departmental and organizational learning and development assets, develops; implements, and monitors retail training to include but not limited to: customer service, teambuilding, facilitation, problem solving, safety, etc.
  • Utilize public relations skills to establish and maintain good working relationships with landlords and the community.
  • Participate and lead in a variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to thrive in a diverse environment including the ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Perform or assist with any duties or operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.
  • Record of accomplishment in establishing and implementing operating standards for all aspects of retail operations and for holding staff accountable.
  • Maintain a complete and open dialog with the COO and/or President and CEO regarding any development within the scope of assigned area of responsibility.
  • Participates in the strategic planning process, retail budgets and agency policy development. Responsible for follow-through and reporting.
  • Capacity to plan and open new stores and familiarity with retail merchandising and store layout. Oversees the merchandising and display of the retail stores.

Financial

  • Assures fiscal viability by reviewing monthly financial performance, with emphasis on sales and cost controls, and developing plans for improvement.
  • Monitors and adjusts the donated and new goods quality, quantity, and pricing systems.
  • Make recommendations to COO and/or President & CEO designed to increase efficiency, increase revenue, and lower expenses.
  • Emphasize the necessity of contribution to GIGCA profitability and exercise decision-making skills to enhance assigned areas of responsibility financial position.

Safety/Loss Prevention

  • Ensures security procedures are in place and enforced to minimize internal and external shrinkage and to provide maximum security and protection of GIGCA assets.
  • Ensure all assigned areas of responsibility are reporting and if tasked, investigating accurately and in a timely manner, all loss prevention matters in accordance with GIGCA procedures.
  • Ensure the proper operation in all assigned areas of security and safety systems including but not limited to: door locks, alarms, office door, bank deposits, refunds, safe, incident reports, fire extinguishers, and cash handling procedures.
  • Inspect to ensure assigned stores and surrounding premises are kept clean and free of safety hazards and that safety procedures are understood and followed by all staff and DGR employees.

Human Resources

  • Responsible for the oversight of all assigned areas in hiring, discipline, promotion, and recommendations for termination.
  • Ensures that all assigned DGR personnel comply with GIGCAs established Safety Program.
  • Participates and gives input on all CARF required plans. Ensures department and plans are followed. Reports to COO and/or President/CEO any completed actions.
  • Monitor all areas of responsibility to ensure that employee performance evaluations are conducted in a timely manner in accordance with policy.
  • Ensure that an efficient and effective work force is maintained in assigned areas of responsibility through proper hiring, training, and direction and that workforce morale is maintained.
  • Follows safe work practices and procedures, reports all accident/incidents and unsafe conditions, completes proper reports and gives them to the Safety Manager. Serve as a team member on the Safety Committee.
  • Serves as a human resources consultant for staff by providing advice on handling personnel issues; meets with managers to identify and provide guidance in resolving employee relations issues in partnership with HR.

Policies and Procedures:

  • Comply with all GIGCA policies, standards, safety and security procedures.

Additional Expectations:

  • Maintain availability to work a flexible schedule that consists of frequent travel being required including overnight and/or extended stays in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Properly wear and maintain all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Attend mandatory management and training meetings and conduct DGR meetings consistently.
  • Assure compliance with all health, safety and fire standards, and all local, state, and federal regulations (TOSHA and OSHA).

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage a minimum of 3 subordinate Leaders/Managers. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

KEY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current drivers license. Proof of personal auto insurance. Clean driving record.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • CPR/First Responder Training.
  • Four-year bachelors degree in related field preferred. At least 5 years of retail or operations experience at a senior level required including overseeing multiple stores; at least 2 years in donated goods retail preferred; creative and flexible problem solving; desire to work with Goodwill Workforce Development clients, employees, and the public; team orientation; appropriate grooming and dressing.
  • Must have good working knowledge of computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Must successfully pass background checks.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
