Vice President, Market Access Strategic Accounts

Trends suggest that markets are becoming fragmented as physicians, providers, patients, and payers look for focused solutions that have optimal efficacy and safety profiles for narrower patient populations. The role of payer organizations is increasing as the complexity of decision-making moves further from the physician. In addition, vertical integration has disrupted the market. Providers are developing their own health plans and payers are acquiring providers – more physicians are now employed by payers than within traditional healthcare delivery organizations. At the same time, large insurers have acquired PBMs allowing for greater focus on total cost of care and integration of pharmacy and medical benefit management (e.g., CVS/Aetna, Cigna/Express Scripts, UnitedHealthcare/ Optum Rx). Taken together, today’s customers are very different from those the industry knew before, and more different from each other.


In response to market trends described above, BMS leadership recognizes the need to fundamentally change how the organization engages with ‘enterprise accounts,’ including major payers (e.g., United/Optum Rx, Cigna/ESI, CVS/Aetna), that control significant access as well as GPOs, and trade organizations.


The position is responsible for being the single point of accountability for the execution of our market access strategies for the US BMS portfolio. The position serves as the primary interface between BMS/VA&P and our payer, GPO, and organized customers. The position reports directly to the SVP, VA&P with responsibilities managing a large team comprised of payer, GPO, and organized customer capabilities.


Responsibilities include


  • Profitable negotiation across all accounts for the US BMS portfolio,
  • Delivery of all value, access, HEOR, population health messages and tools,
  • Leverage customer insights to enhance strategic cross functional business planning,
  • Ensure the creation and execution of strategic account management plans, and
  • Training of all team members in compliance with BMS standards
  • Facilitate senior executive interactions,


Candidate Specifications


  • Possess executive presence and the ability to close profitable deals with managed care and government payers
  • Pricing/contracting experience (3+ years)
  • Experience in medical and pharmacy benefit products
  • Market access experience (GPO, IDN, Trade, distribution) (3+ years)
  • Recent payer National Account management experience (6+ years)
  • Bachelors required; advanced degree preferred (MBA, PharmD, etc.)
  • Proven leadership skills, analytical, and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
  • Sales experience (3+ years)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop customer centric approaches, leverage multi-disciplinary capabilities and resources in order to realize coverage objectives
