Job Description
Position Summary


The Vice President of Development plays a pivotal role in driving the implementation of the strategic direction and success of INP's fundraising efforts. This position oversees and leads all aspects of fundraising initiatives and day-to-day management for development activities, ensuring alignment with INP's mission. With a strong focus on internal operations and capacity building, the Vice President of Development enhances and maintains grant writing systems and infrastructure, leads and manages a high-performing team, identifies new prospects, and provides stewardship to select donors. As a passionate leader, the VP understands and embodies INP's mission and vision, upholding the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and seeking to build the social sector's effectiveness through the leaders and organizations INP serves. With a staff of 4-6 professionals under their supervision, the VP of Development drives a collaborative and results-oriented team to achieve fundraising goals and foster INP's growth and impact.


Essential Functions


Development Strategy Management and Execution


  • Provides analysis and reporting on the overall performance of fundraising against goals and strategic plan.
  • Identifies new major funding sources, serving as one of INP’s primary knowledge sources for funding opportunities and philanthropic outlets.
  • Monitors funding commitments and works cross-departmentally to ensure all obligations to funders are met and communication is consistent, personalized, and aligned with INP’s values.
  • Works in partnership with the CAO to develop and implement a fundraising plan for each of INP’s programs and activities to achieve short- and long-term goals.
  • Reports directly to the Chief Advancement Officer, and works with the CEO, Chief Strategy and Administrative Officer, Chief Program Officer, and Board of Directors to manage and develop strategies across fundraising channels.
  • Benchmarks and keeps abreast of important developments within the local, regional, and national funding landscape.
  • Provides INP with strong, creative, energetic, strategic leadership on all fundraising initiatives.


Donor Relations and Cultivation


  • Implements, manages, and assesses comprehensive donor management strategy to cultivate, steward, and acknowledge gifts and maintain strong communication with donors.
  • Oversees development of, and manages, donor and fundraising events as needed.
  • In partnership with INP’s CAO and CEO, designs and implements revenue growth and retention strategies with existing donors and opportunities to forge new donor relationships.
  • Develops and manages systems that foster a positive, ongoing relationship with donors and ensure that long-term relationships are forged by supporting key staff or lead relationship stewards across the team to maintain contact and proactively educate donors on the outcomes and results of INP’s efforts.


Leadership and Team Development


  • Contributes to the continued growth of INP through team development and participation in Senior Leadership team discussions along with assisting in the preparation of information on development for INP’s Board of Directors.
  • Champions and nurtures a strong team of development professionals; oversees the recruitment, management, development, and retention of professional and support staff.
  • Oversees and manages the Development team to achieve or exceed their revenue targets; manages margins, controls costs, and capitalizes on operational efficiencies.
  • Evaluates staff, cultivating a strong sense of teamwork, and establishes an environment of mentoring and support; coaches the team and brings strategic focus to the development department.


Revenue Tracking & Grants Management


  • Guide and support grant writers in drafting, revising, and producing compelling proposals and reports that adhere to proposal-writing standards and reflect the organization's mission and achievements.
  • Partners with Finance and Program staff to ensure accurate and timely reporting of grant-funded activities, including financial performance, outcomes achieved, and compliance with grant terms.
  • Provides strategic guidance on revenue forecasting, budgeting, and resource allocation, leveraging financial data and insights to inform decision-making.
  • Develop and implement strategies to identify grant funding opportunities at the state, national, and institutional levels.
  • Builds on a strong experience base and creative intellect, designs and pursues growth strategies for existing fundraising channels.
  • Provide comprehensive oversight of the grant writing process and grant writers, ensuring the production of high-quality grant proposals and reports.


Supplier Management


  • In partnership with Marketing and Communications, maintains and updates organizational brand standards and communicates and ensures the execution of the brand across all fundraising materials.
  • Collaborates with the IT Department and outside experts to ensure seamless management and implementation of all fundraising applications and technologies as critical components of the organization’s capacity to raise funds.
  • Ensures adherence to organizational policies and procedures as well as the timely review of supplier needs and pricing through formal RFI and RFP practices as needed.
  • Directs procurement of all necessary external resources for the execution and support of INP’s fundraising efforts including donation processing vendors, etc.
  • Other related tasks as assigned.


Skills & Experience


INP is a growing entrepreneurial organization where every staff member is expected to support the broader INP team and adapt as needed to achieve the organization’s mission.


  • A minimum of 10 years of fundraising, advancement, or development experience in progressively responsible leadership positions.
  • Proficient in editing and reviewing written materials for clarity, coherence, and grammatical accuracy, ensuring consistent messaging and adherence to brand guidelines.
  • Strong and effective writing skills, with the ability to craft compelling and persuasive communication materials, including grant proposals and donor appeals.
  • Strong background managing all aspects of fundraising including donor prospecting and stewardship, foundation and corporate relations, direct mail, etc.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing operational and performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrated superior attention to detail and accuracy in managing complex projects, ensuring all aspects are meticulously executed and deliverables meet high standards.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to develop and refine written content, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Proven successful project management track record, including planning, organizing, and implementing strategic initiatives within established timelines and budgets.
  • Experience with planning and management toward significant fundraising goals.
  • An authentic passion for INP’s mission and desire to foster practices incorporating diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging is a must.
  • Experience creating and managing grant budgets.
  • Strong understanding of data utilization and management, as well as the effective


use of fundraising technology and data for strategic operations and decision-making.


  • Experience with Salesforce is a plus.

Compensation And Benefits


INP offers a competitive salary for all staff positions. The exact salary that will be offered to the Vice President, Development will be determined based on a consideration of the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and geography and aligned with INP’s compensation policies. Salary Range: $115,000 to $125,000 annually.
