This will include some land management activities, such as removing exotic species by manual, mechanical or chemical methods, and/or conducting species monitoring and trail and fence maintenance. The job requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. They also monitor preserve areas, including those frequented by the visiting public, and they will interface with the public to assure appropriate public use. The UALS sometimes coordinates and supervises volunteers and contractors to maintain and enhance preserves in the West Desert of Utah.

The UALS may need to open and close preserves to the visiting public and maintain preserve records using a database, PC or mobile device.
