YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Utah Assistant Land Steward performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Utah Assistant Land Steward (UALS) provides support to the Utah Chapter, with a primary focus on the Southwestern portion of the state. The UALS will plan and implement preserve management stewardship in Southwest Utah. They address critical threats to natural systems and individual species on TNC-owned preserves and supply the conservation team with site or landscape level information for existing and potential Southwest Utah preserves. The UALS ensures the maintenance of TNC preserve areas.
The UALS coordinates multiple projects. They will perform and participate in preserve operations, maintenance and management. This will include some land management activities, such as removing exotic species by manual, mechanical or chemical methods, and/or conducting species monitoring and trail and fence maintenance. The job requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. They also monitor preserve areas, including those frequented by the visiting public, and they will interface with the public to assure appropriate public use. The UALS sometimes coordinates and supervises volunteers and contractors to maintain and enhance preserves in the West Desert of Utah.
The UALS may need to open and close preserves to the visiting public and maintain preserve records using a database, PC or mobile device. They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. The position requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
The employee will be based in or near Washington County, Utah.
This is an hourly position, with benefits, for 20 hours of work per week. Schedule may vary but will be pre-approved by supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- May work under infrequent supervision.
- Supervises no staff but may coordinate and supervise volunteers and contractors to maintain and enhance preserves in the West Desert of Utah.
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- May require long hours in isolated settings on difficult and hazardous terrain, in variable weather conditions.
- Diplomatically enforces preserve rules with the public.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability and willingness to do manual labor, as needed, to maintain the preserve to conservation standards.
- High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management, or equivalent combination.
- Written and spoken communication skills in English.
- Experience meeting deadlines independently.
- Ability and willingness to engage with members of the public and other community stakeholders.
- Must be able to obtain other related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g., First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
- Must have valid driver's license.
- Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., brush hog, chainsaw, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in land conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
- Experience managing volunteers and contractors.
- Preference for candidate with lived experience in the Washington County area.
- Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
- Experience networking with potential partners, like other local NGOs, gear shops, trail race sponsors, etc.
- 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
