In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.


The Stanford Guest House (SGH) is a 112-room limited-service hotel located at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and operated by Stanford Hospitalities. The housekeeping department is responsible for cleaning, organizing, and maintaining the SGH building and surrounding grounds to provide an exceptional customer experience for our guests. This position delivers custodial support, guest services and light-industrial assistance towards that effort according to hospitality/hotel industry standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, and other duties may be assigned:


  • Power wash and blow exterior spaces and grounds as needed.
  • Report to management all emergencies damages, fixtures/furniture losses, maintenance needs, equipment repairs, and safety issues.
  • Clean, scrub, sweep, pick up, wipe, wash, dust, polish all common interior/exterior areas including walls, handrails, fixtures, woodwork, ceilings, furniture, light fixtures, appliances, picture frames, mirrors, water fountains, switch covers, and shelving.
  • Assemble, repair, tighten and install furniture including bed frames.
  • Dust, brush and/or polish furniture and other surfaces.
  • Provide information by demonstrating cleaning techniques, equipment and cleaning chemicals to new and temporary employees.
  • Inspect guest rooms and public areas for safety hazards and operating condition of equipment.
  • Wash and maintain the interior and exterior of SGH shuttle van.
  • Clean a variety of floors and floor coverings.
  • Install repair towel racks, toilet seats, blinds, shades, drapes and screens.
  • Make beds with clean linen and provide clean towels according to hotel industry standards.
  • Report supplies needed or repair required on equipment/vehicles.
  • Organize and maintain all equipment and chemicals in the custodial closet in a secure, clean, and in ready condition for use.
  • Clean windows and doors in designated areas.
  • Produce daily task assignment sheets using SGH property management software system and mediate disputes between staff when supervisor is not available.
  • Responsible for adhering to all safety guidelines and procedures; must wear safety gear in performing tasks such as wearing safety glasses, gloves, and protective clothing when appropriate.
  • Respond to routine guest requests.
  • Follow and adhere to all security measures including signing keys in and out at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Check vacant clean rooms when assigned.
  • Setup, maintain and clean up after continental breakfast service.
  • Understand how to prepare and use all chemicals and maintain MSDS manual on cleaning chemicals.
  • Clean kitchenette. Remove and relocate dishes from counter to designated area. Clean exterior and interior of stove, refrigerator, sink, counter tops, cabinets and drawers.
  • Replace lamps, light switches, and outlet covers.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, shower rooms, laundry rooms, exercise rooms, break rooms, store rooms and locker areas.
  • Perform light maintenance work including touch-up painting, replace pop-up sink stoppers in bathroom sinks, clean out and/or plunge drains and toilets, and use water removal equipment in the event of flooding.
  • Restock custodial closets on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for keeping building, equipment and disposal areas up to department standards.
  • Grounds cleanup including trash and leaves.
  • Relocate, store, deliver and dispose of furniture, appliances, abandoned property and any other property designated by supervisor.
  • Remove and replace used guest amenities and trash.
  • Drive guests and employees in shuttle van.
  • Clean and sanitize guest room bathrooms, showers, tubs, sinks, and fixtures.
  • Replenish guest amenities and supplies.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


§ Work areas are in and outside of the Student Guest House facility and may include other properties under Student Housing purview.


MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED:


  • Hand tools (screw driver, hammer, scraper, box opener, etc.)
  • Moving equipment (dollies, carts, hand trucks, trash bins, etc.)
  • Commercial cleaning chemicals and supplies
  • Computer
  • Cleaning equipment (vacuum, mop, wet vacuum, carpet cleaner, waxer, buffer, broom, rake, blower and power-wash machines)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions):


  • The ability to stoop, kneel, carry, ascend/descend stairs, climb ladder, push and pull on a regular basis.
  • This position is considered moderately to highly physical, and requires a lot of standing, bending, lifting and walking. Approximately 95% of time is spent standing or moving around work area, and approximately 5% of time is spent working at a desk, or sitting.
  • The ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis is necessary for transporting supplies and goods.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:


  • Good oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and cooperatively with co-workers, guests, other department staff members, and management on a daily basis.

  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain a service attitude and approach to guests and other customers.
  • The ability to learn and apply safe work practices, including hazardous waste management and handling, injury and illness prevention program, confined space procedures and safe chemical practices.
  • Correctly maintains, stores, secures equipment at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Experience maintaining a variety of floor surfaces and using buffers, waxers and carpet cleaners.
  • Computer skills required with experience using property management or similar database software, internet, and email.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to install and make minor repairs to common household fixtures.
  • Must be able to work variable shifts between 6am and 10 pm daily including weekends and holidays.
  • Must have a valid CA Driver’s License and ability to drive a 12-person passenger van.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, load, carry, ascend/descend stairs, climb ladder, push and pull.
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience housekeeping, custodial, handyperson and/or light maintenance experience required, preferably in a hospitality setting.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; some college and/or apprenticeship preferred.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience operating hand tools and using cleaning chemicals according to safe work practices.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in English, bilingual Spanish preferred.

The expected pay for this position is $29.56 (Step 1) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.


Internal candidate rates will be applied based on the CBA language for promotion and transfer.
