Job Description

THE COMPANY

BluePenguin is a payments technology company startup, often called a “fintech” if that term is familiar. We provide a software-as-a-service platform to help businesses remove the friction from their accounts payable processes. Businesses in the USA write over $10 trillion in paper checks annually to pay their bills; our technology helps convert that to digital payment cards and other forms of payment, reducing risk and manual effort, and giving our users the opportunity to earn rebates for every bill they pay. We are experiencing tremendous growth and are growing our product and technology office in Creve Coeur, Missouri, a western suburb of St. Louis. Our plan is to grow to approximately 20 FTE in the next 12 months, approximately half of that in Creve Coeur.

Because of our size, people joining our company must understand they will be defining the role they occupy, not just adhering to the terms of a job description. Our early hires need to be a blend of thinkers and doers, who are just as interested in creating procedures and standards for future resources to follow as they are in getting the day’s work done. We pride ourselves in being able to “punch above our weight” in organizational maturity when it comes to financial compliance, technology security and general professionalism; that’s why our customers and partners trust us with millions of dollars every day. In other words, people looking for highly formulaic roles simply will not thrive at BluePenguin today. However, people who want to rise to the challenge of performing a role and defining what that role *should* be, and providing leadership both to the organization today as well as those who will follow them, will find a challenging and rewarding journey.

BluePenguin offers a warm and inclusive culture that gives everyone a voice, respects the work-life balance of the employee, and offers high quality benefits including medical, dental, disability, retirement with matching contributions, hybrid home/office work and stock options for selected roles.

THE ROLE

The Technical Sales Engineer provides critical linkage between BluePenguin's sales and product development teams. Utilizing a blend of technical and sales acumen, you'll help our sales team engage and write meaningful enterprise-level direct and channel partnerships. You'll help prospects and partners alike understand the capabilities of our platform and the choices they have for integration and implementation. You'll also use these interactions as well as other patterns you observe in the marketplace to help the Chief Product Officer establish and execute a roadmap that both increases the value and stickiness of our service to existing relationships, as well as position us to capture share elsewhere.

When it comes to integration and implementation, you'll be a prospect's guide through utilizing the API or our quickstart portal. From time to time you will likely build or contribute to both custom and 'off the shelf' integrations we offer to popular ERP and account systems.

Obviously you'll be a critical "face of the company" for many of our external relationships and a "voice of the customer" inside the organization. That is why we're looking for an important blend of payments industry expertise, SaaS systems development (or development skills) and what are often termed "front office skills." A genuine desire to help our partners succeed and to collaborate as a team are essential in this role. However, the Solution Engineer is NOT expected to do help desk-style or in-the-trenches customer support role. That may happen from time to time due to the nature of a start-up; but if it happens a lot, we're doing it wrong. The goal of the role is to help our customers and partners be successful on their own.

This role includes participation in BluePenguin's incentive stock options plan as well as the benefits outlined in the job model.

A day in this role might include things like the following:

  • Transforming customer / prospect inquiries or market learnings to product development workstreams that can be broken down into achievable tasks
  • Acting as a SME for sales related to platform capabilities, payment industry dynamics and program solution design
  • Acting as the voice of the customer within the company and the voice of the company to the outside market
  • Mapping your knowledge of the payments ecosystem and BluePenguin's platform capabilities to the specific use case(s) at a prospect or client
  • Cross-training sales, implementation and development resources as necessary so that team members gain the best possible context for opportunities you've identified and the work that's being performed
  • Designing integration schematics and flowcharts
  • Answering questions about our platform services and how to use the API
  • Helping executive leadership develop product roadmaps and customer growth plans

Important skills for the candidate to possess include:

  • Degree in computer science, MIS, etc. desirable but not required; most important is real world practical experience helping organizations understand and adopt SaaS services
  • Familiarity with modern Web and SaaS integration technologies such as RESTful APIs
  • Willingness to provide occasional after hours support as needed
  • Strength in respectful, positive communication and teamwork
  • Familiarity with card and payment processing, ideally utilizing platforms such as Stripe, Adyen, Marqeta, Lithic, Galileo etc.
  • Experience in fast-moving startup environments where many different hats are worn throughout each day
  • Familiarity with the solution design / engineering needs that often occur in SaaS / enterprise solution sales
