Position Summary:
The Senior Manager, Supply Chain Operations role will be responsible for managing the strategic relationship with Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers across the North America commercial supply chain. The incumbent will ensure oversight of distribution and fulfillment operations to maintain a high level of customer service and supply continuity. The successful candidate will have well-developed communication skills and demonstrate exceptional collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to develop practical solutions to ensure uninterrupted supply and maintain a high-level of customer service.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Evaluate existing procedures and department SOPs, along with identification of gaps; modify the existing and create new procedures that align with ongoing business and organizational transformation.
- Develop a regular cadence of performance management with 3PL partners at varying frequencies; daily, monthly, quarterly. Hold regular meetings with key stakeholders to optimize communication channels and information flow with 3PL partners and lead ongoing review of supplier performance and KPIs through the development of reporting capabilities or dashboards and drive improvement during business review meetings.
- Develop strong, collaborative relationships with Apellis’s existing and future Third Party Logistics (3PL) network across US and Canada markets to identify opportunities to increase value, maximize operational efficiency and manage risk.
- Lead the annual budget process for 3PL related supply chain expenses. Translate commercial forecasts into operational expenses. Communicate volumes, goals, and budgets to 3PL network, to assure that appropriate capacities and resources are available to support the commercial product portfolios including finished goods, medical devices, and ancillaries.
- Evaluate the use of existing technologies and lead improvement efforts across 3PL and Apellis IT systems with integration opportunities and/or real-time data exchange.
- Support the compliant supply of products to our customers, ensuring adherence with cold chain management procedures in the execution of pick, pack, ship operations.
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance to promote and maintain compliance. Initiate change controls, investigate deviations, implement CAPAs and drive closure.
- Serve as the primary Point of Contact on operational matters with 3PL, including inventory control and reconciliation, physical returns and destructions disposition and execution, temperature excursion triage and management of shipment and distribution exceptions.
- Enable Apellis’s 3PL network strategy through the selection and implementation of new providers with considerations for scale and flexibility.
- Act as an internal subject matter expert on all day-to-day operational activities, with working proficiency of the Order to Cash process and a keen lens on customer service and quality.
- Contribute towards continuous improvement projects to install expanded capabilities and improve the efficiency of existing processes.
Education, Registration & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Engineering, Business Administration, or similar education required. Master's Degree and/or Supply Chain certification is a plus.
Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in the biotech / pharmaceutical industry with at least 3+ years in Supply Chain roles of increasing complexity.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
- Exceptional team player. Ability to develop a strong network across the company.
- Ability to work in fast paced environments, and great organizational skills to effectively prioritize a broad range of projects and manage tasks simultaneously.
- Experience with supplier relationship management in a cGMP environment and quality mindset.
- In-depth knowledge of 3PL distribution and customer service operations, cost and service drivers, cold chain management, pharmaceutical and device manufacturing, warehousing, and cGxP requirements for ensuring safe and compliant operations.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills, with ability to articulate recommendations and key decision points to senior management.
- Experience working in ERP systems, preferably SAP.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets. This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel Requirements:
- May require occasional travel to supplier locations for business reviews and/or to oversee operations (estimated 10-15%)
