Mission or Department Overview & Responsibilities:


  • Create and implement communications plans that raise the profile of our business.
  • Partner with leaders in Technology, Growth, Product, Marketing and Advertising to help them to determine what they need to communicate with the outside world, give them advice, and support their efforts to champion our messages.
  • Partner with the Executive Director of External Communications on promotion for the Athletic, focusing on market positioning across advertising, tech, product and design industry media.
  • Monitor and share outcomes to find successes, milestones and unique stories to share publicly to amplify the value of the Times.
  • Pitch trade and consumer stories for Times projects, product launches, and business endeavors.
  • Serve as an external communications contact and media spokesperson for business-side departments of The New York Times.
  • Work with the Culture and Communications team, and Marketing, to make sure synchronized messaging, campaigns, and strategies are in place.
  • Provide support for business-side storytelling of other standalone products, including Games and Audio, as needed.
  • Write press releases, blog posts and statements.
  • Manage thought-leadership opportunities for business-side executives and secure, advise and approve all business-side employees on speaking engagements including reviewing public-facing presentations.


Basic Qualifications


  • Eight to ten years of experience in a communications role
  • Ability to learn, synthesize, and accurately disseminate information.
  • Proven media relations experience and results
  • Good project management skills
  • Collaborative and able to work with a variety of teams and subject-matter experts.
  • Experience working with a wide range of digital and technology media outlets
  • Belief in the value of independent journalism to people and society as a whole, as well as the growing business that supports it.
  • Attentive to details


Preferred Qualifications


  • Lead and developed crisis response plans
  • Experience leading responses to press inquiries
  • Prior experience evaluating and reporting on the performance of public relations efforts and results of function-specific PR strategies.
  • Experience managing external PR firms


The rate of base pay for this role is between $60.00 and $70.00 per hour.
