General Notes
This position is located in Port Aransas, TX. Only applicants authorized to work in the United States will be considered.
Purpose: The Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) in Port Aransas, Texas is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to lead and coordinate the NERR’s Research Sector. The position will assist the Research Coordinator in SWMP sampling efforts and assist the NERR in other research monitoring efforts including vegetation monitoring. Duties include primarily field work, instrument calibration and data analysis.
Responsibilities: The Research Coordinator is responsible for: 1) administering and implementing the Reserve’s research and monitoring program to achieve Management Plan objectives, meet Reserve and UTMSI needs, address local, state, and national coastal management needs, and accomplish National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) directives; 2) facilitating research by others on the Reserve; 3) fostering partnerships to support other Reserve sectors, and to link the research and monitoring program to relevant state, federal and university activities in the state and region; 4) preparing proposals for external funding; 5) coordinating work with other Reserves, and participating in the NERRS research network; 6) translating research and monitoring results for multiple purposes, including preparing and presenting papers and posters for scientific & technical meetings and coastal decision makers; 7) advising and participating in relevant local and regional work groups and committees to advance coastal and estuarine science, conservation and restoration; 8) supervising research staff and interns, and providing guidance to graduate student researchers; 9) developing and managing the program budget; 10) conduct field work implementing the System Wide Monitoring Program.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally to diverse audiences.
  • Master degree in Biology or a related field
  • Considerable knowledge of research and monitoring project planning, design, implementation and reporting, and ability to manage concurrent projects.
  • Ability to operate/maintain scientific instruments, understand and follow complex, written technical operating and quality assurance procedures.
  • Experience developing and maintaining agency/institutional partnerships.
  • Considerable knowledge of Texas’s estuarine ecosystems and coastal management issues.
  • Experience preparing research proposals, analyzing long-term datasets, and translating research and monitoring results for multiple purposes, including publishing results in the scientific literature.
  • Ability to evaluate and align programs with state and national guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating various sizes of boats.
  • A Ph.D. degree in marine science, coastal ecology or related field and at least four years related experience.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provided a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
Salary Range
$50,000+ depending on qualifications
