What We Want
Texas A&M Institute for Genome Sciences and Society’s (TIGSS) is seeking a Research Associate who will provide customer service, train and assist users of common laboratory equipment, assist in planning Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), conduct NGS and other molecular biology experiments, perform basic bioinformatics analysis when needed, coordinate with the bioinformatician to initiate data analysis and maintain data and other records. We seek to hire a candidate with a Bachelor’s degree in genetics, molecular biology or other life sciences, and has at least two years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory. The preferred candidate will have a Master’s degree in genetics or molecular biology and five years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory. We are looking to hire a candidate who is a team player, promotes collaboration and cooperation within a team, and possesses excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.
Required Education and Experience:
  • B.S. degree in genetics, molecular biology, or other life sciences
  • 2 years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to multitask and manage assigned tasks independently.
  • Familiarity and experience with basic molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid isolation, PCR and qPCR, and gel or capillary electrophoresis
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and establish effective working relationships.
  • Familiarity and experience with NGS library preparation and quality control.
  • Working knowledge of common computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use judgment and discretion.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity and experience with the operation and maintenance of Illumina sequencing systems (MiSeq, NextSeq and/or NovaSeq)
  • 5 years in a molecular biology laboratory
  • M.S. degree in genetics or molecular/cellular biology
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity and experience with any of the following:
  • Bionano Saphyr optical mapping system
  • Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION/GridION sequencing systems
  • 10x Genomics single cell sequencing preparation systems (Chromium X, Chromium Connect)
  • 10x Genomics spatial gene expression profiling systems (Visium, CytAssist)
  • Automated sample preparation systems (Eppendorf epMotion 5075 or similar).
  • Bio-Rad QX200 droplet digital PCR system.
Responsibilities
  • Customer Service and Support - Assists self-service customers with any issues in the common equipment workspace. Receives samples for NGS or other genomics services. Assists with distributing NGS and other data back to customers. Provides methodologies for customer publications and answers other customer questions about procedures and data.
  • Next Generation Sequencing - Performs NGS library preparation for multiple sample types. Runs the MiSeq, NextSeq 2000 and/or GridION sequencers. Sends libraries to the North Texas Genome Core at UT Arlington for sequencing on the NovaSeq 6000. Assists with preparation of single-cell and spatial RNA sequencing libraries. Works closely with the bioinformaticians to ensure that data are routed for analysis services or distributed back to the customers, as appropriate.
  • Other Genomics Services - Performs genomics services other than NGS; may include but are not limited to: Nucleic acid isolation; qPCR, RT-qPCR, and droplet digital PCR; Whole-genome SNP genotyping or methylation genotyping on llumina Infinium arrays; Optical genome mapping on Bionano Genomics Saphyr system
