Your Role as a Pupil Services Specialist
In this role, we would entrust you to perform services for students in one of the following areas; educational diagnosis, counseling, social work, specialized instruction, or psychological services and assessments. Additionally, we would have you:
  • Other duties as needed
  • Keep records and make necessary reports, including but not limited to, IEP's state assessments and educational histories
  • Serve as a liaison with school systems and community services
  • Serve in a resource capacity to educational staff and other appropriate individuals
  • Confer with parents, guardians, and teachers concerning individual students and assist in planning educational programs
Position Highlights
  • Monday - Friday, 7:50 am - 3:20 pm
  • Located at the Albert J. Solnit Children's Center - South Campus
  • Full-time, 35 hours per week
  • State of Connecticut certification in at least one of the following is required: School Counselor (068), School Psychologist (070), or School Social Worker (071)
Our Ideal Candidate
  • Experienced working with students in a hospital setting
  • Must have a working knowledge of classroom routines and discipline
  • Ability to input student schedules into Power School
  • Familiar with the new CT Special Education Data System (SEDS) Individualized Education Program (IEP) Platform
  • Ability to multitask to a high degree of success
  • Able to work with a variety of different disciplines throughout the day
  • Outstanding personal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with students Local Education Agency
  • Understanding of the different types of learning styles of students and provide appropriate class schedule to meet their needs
  • Familiar with IEP Direct Platform
Albert J. Solnit Children's Center - South Campus
Located in Middletown, it is widely recognized as a center of excellence for family-centered treatment of children and youth with serious emotional disturbances. This state-administered Psychiatric facility provides comprehensive care to children and adolescents under the age of eighteen, with severe mental illness and related behavioral and emotional problems who cannot be safely assessed or treated in a less restrictive setting.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state institution, facility or region within a state unified school district, performs professional services within the area of pupil personnel and special education services in a school setting and serves in a resource capacity and consultant to teachers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs services for students in the area of special training such as educational diagnosis, counseling, speech and hearing, social work, or psychological services; serves in a resource capacity to educational staff and other appropriate individuals; confers with parents and teachers concerning individual students and assists in planning educational programs; keeps records and makes necessary reports; may serve as liaison with school systems and community services; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of the philosophy and methods of service delivery to the assigned disciplines; knowledge of the principles and practices of education and or services for special needs population; ability to motivate students; ability to communicate at the appropriate level; ability to establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in planning educational programs; ability to prepare written reports; ability to perform educational testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree which includes a planned program of preparation for the field in which the special services are performed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in Special Education services and laws
  • Experience in alternative education settings
  • Experience with 6-12 Educational Assessments (psychological and academic), e.g., Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement 3rd edition (KTEA3), Planning Placement Teams (PPT’s), Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children 4 (WISC4)
  • State of Connecticut Special Education 165 Certification
  • Experience with Chairing PPT’s

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess an appropriate certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in special education or special services areas such as school counselor (elementary or secondary), speech and hearing consultant, school psychologist, psychological examiner or school social worker.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
