Job Description
Sisters in Control Environmental Justice Program


Black women and girls are under-protected from and under-informed about toxins in their environment that affect reproductive health; this is rooted in systemic racism both within the built environment of Los Angeles and in the beauty industry. Therefore the mission of the Black Women for Wellness' Sisters in Control Environmental Justice program is to To reduce the toxic chemical exposures that Black women and girls face in their built environments, personal care products, and households through health education, research, and advocacy.


Job Summary & General Expectations


The Program Coordinator for the Sisters in Control–Environmental Justice program primary focus is on Black Women for Wellness’ environmental research, advocacy, and educational projects.


The Program Coordinator works in partnership with the Program Manager to design program implementation strategies, collect data, engage with the community, conduct outreach, and represent the organization at key meetings and community events.


This Position Is Ideal For


  • An individual who can juggle multiple projects and priorities autonomously.
  • A highly motivated individual who is a self-starter, requires minimal supervision, has leadership experience, and who is committed to working with Black women around environmental health and justice issues as it pertains to advocacy, research and policy.
  • An individual who takes initiative to move projects forward without needing to be asked and is willing to be a leader where needed.
  • An individual who can design, build, and deliver presentations to our community, partners, at conferences, etc.
  • An individual who is willing and excited to work non-traditional hours to support community members during times that may best work for their schedules.
  • An individual who enjoys educating others on environmental health concerns they face and who can speak eloquently on the issues we work on.
  • An individual who is able to lead projects and campaigns from concept to completion while collaborating with our various partners and maintaining internal communications on the status of initiatives.


Primary Responsibilities And Duties


The Sisters in Control - Environmental Justice Program Coordinator primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Advocacy and Policy (NOTE: as a 501 c(3), BWW engages in minimal policy work)


  • Conduct policy analyses.
  • Participate in coalitions/co-sponsor meetings on environmental bills
  • Develop related printed materials, factsheets and support development of communication materials created by other EJ team members.
  • Participation with advocacy and implementation of Black Women for Wellness environmental justice policy agenda
  • Deliver pitches and presentations to elected officials regarding the issues faced by our communities to help guide policy.
  • Contribute to and support development of messaging campaigns connected to policy efforts
  • Engage in the California and federal legislative processes as needed. For instance, representing Black Women for Wellness in Sacramento to support certain policies.
  • Develop and train volunteers as environmental justice advocates.


Community Outreach and Engagement


  • Support the implementation of a strong internship program with federal and local agencies that support both students and the organization with moving an environmental justice agenda forward in California/south Los Angeles
  • Seek and cultivate potential research partners (with local beauty industry businesses, managers, community members, research institutions, governmental agencies, and academics)
  • Create/distribute educational materials on Environmental Justice/toxics issues
  • Translate learnings from community outreach and engagement into research, advocacy, and policy initiatives while ensuring those initiatives remain community inspired.
  • Lead and manage community outreach efforts from start to finish without much supervision.
  • Conduct presentations, workshops and trainings about environmental toxic issues


Community Building and Collaboration


  • Develop and cultivate relationships with beauty professionals, stylists, and salon owners in South Los Angeles/Inglewood area.
  • Actively participate in coalitions and partnerships with academic institutions, research institutions, organizations, and boards in our environmental justice work (Coalitions)
  • Serve as the community liaison with academic institutions, research institutions, boards and coalitions that partner with Black Women for Wellness in our environmental justice work
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with state, national, and international partners working in the built environment space. For instance, those working toward water equity, addressing the lifecycle of plastic pollution, and eliminating neighborhood oil drilling.


Communications and Social Engagement


  • Work with the communications manager on communication strategies regarding the EJ team’s projects.
  • Support instituting a strong social media presence via webinars, Instagram Live and other social media combined with traditional media that promotes our environmental justice work
  • Create/distribute, develop factsheets, reports, and other materials from community-based research on Environmental Justice/toxic issues.
  • Strategize the communication most timely and necessary for the community.
  • Represent Black Women for Wellness at relevant events and within the community by highlighting and embodying our organizational mission.


Research and Knowledge Building


  • Participate with publication of journals, popular education and social media, abstracts to conferences and institutes on the environmental justice research and work of Black Women for Wellness
  • Stay updated on environmental toxic related issues and work with the Program Manager to connect insights learned to the EJ teams work
  • Conduct community based research within communities of color
  • Record, transcribe, analyze and input data from research
  • Survey outreach, facilitate focus groups, other data collection


Granting


  • Lead or support grant activities as requested.
  • Assist the EJ team Program Lead and Program Manager with grant writing, reporting, and researching. This may require collaboration across organizations.
  • Keep on the look out for grants that could support EJ team projects and goals.


Education And Experience


  • Requires two (2) to three (3) years of experience coordinating programs and providing educational workshops, presentations, and trainings
  • Requires Bachelor Degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, or other related field
  • Requires two (2) to three (3) years of experience conducting both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Requires two (2) to three (3) years of experience conducting community based research within communities of color


Qualifications And Requirements


  • Travel Required Some nights & weekends as needed
  • Values accuracy and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of South Los Angeles communities is a plus
  • Possesses a professional appearance and attitude, and strong work ethic
  • Must have outstanding oral and written communications skills, experience working with Black communities
  • Must have access to reliable transportation
  • Share Black Women for Wellness values and mission
  • Proficient with online media tools including Facebook, Instagram, Canva
  • Able to work in a team-based environment, is effective at team building, able to utilize team resources productively and efficiently while remaining flexible and responsive to new ideas and situations
  • Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required
  • Proficient with Google and Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to relate to Black/African American communities as well as other diverse communities;
  • Must have experience managing initiatives from start to finish with minimal supervision.
Salary: Non-exempt and eligible for overtime and meal and rest breaks
