The Role

At Matrix Renewables we are looking for a highly motivated individual to play a key role in Project Development in the U.S. The Candidate will be responsible for overseeing environmental and permitting across Matrix’ entire US development portfolio in the U.S., reporting to the VP of US Development out of Matrix’s office in Miami. The Candidate should use their experience and intelligence to identify risks and opportunities, to assess the quality of work done by Matrix’s joint developers, and to guide Matrix in understanding the risks and opportunities that these projects face. The Candidate should be mature enough to represent Matrix’s interests with the local teams and stakeholders, being confident to proactively defend Matrix even if that position is opposed by the joint developer or stakeholders. The Candidate should have a good network of connections in the renewable energy environmental and permitting sector in the U.S. The Candidate must be familiar with all aspects of the environmental and permitting of renewable energy projects. During the development phase, the candidate will collaborate with in-house Matrix and external teams to ensure that projects obtain all the permits, authorizations, and licenses, and performed all environmental studies, necessary to reach Ready to Build (“RTB”) status, on time.


Key activities and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement prudent, cost effective environmental and permitting strategies for Matrix’s projects that minimize or avoid environmental impacts
  • Lead all environmental and permitting aspects of Matrix’s existing and potential projects, whether greenfield or acquisition, including interfacing with local, state and federal authorities, local communities, landowners and developers
  • Ensure the highest compliance with anticorruption practices in dealing with all the stakeholders
  • Ensure smooth handover of development activities to Matrix’s construction and operations department for its projects
  • Lead environmental and permitting compliance processes and oversee compliance documentation for acquisition, development, construction, and operations, translating regulations and permits into actionable tasks
  • Support other departments, including acquisitions, finance, accounting, construction and operations, as a team member
  • Lead internal environmental and permitting reporting to support management and investment decisions
  • Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned
  • Manage the status of the environmental and permitting project matters in its pipeline and associated schedules, liaising with joint developers to help to deliver projects to RTB on time
  • Lead and oversee permit applications, environmental reports and studies and agency consultation
  • Engage in community and public relations for Matrix’s projects,
  • Provide written and verbal testimony and otherwise represent Matrix at public hearings and community meetings, as needed
  • Stay current on federal, state and local environmental and permitting matters, including policy or regulatory changes and new case law, and assist determining impact and disseminating relevant information to internal stakeholders
  • Implement Matrix’s ESG policy at local level in compliance with modern standards, regulations, and best industry practice. Flag any ESG issues as soon as possible, gather information related to them and, where instructed, interact with stakeholders if appropriate


General Skills / Attributes:

  • Comfortable attending lobbying events both at the national and local level, in both political and civil service spheres
  • Experience and full understanding of the material environmental and permitting matters in various geographies and jurisdictions throughout, including potentially ERCOT, MISO, SPP, PJM, CAISO and WECC
  • BA or BS in a relevant field; MS or MA in a relevant field a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership of a team, working in a collaborative and supportive manner
  • Strong decision-making skills in light of uncertainty
  • Strong entrepreneurial, organizational, analytical and people skills
  • Good industry contacts with state and federal agencies as well as top tier consultants
  • High attention to detail and curiosity
  • Native English
  • Aptitude for analytic and research work
  • 6+ years of renewable energy industry experience in environmental and permitting roles
  • Deep experience working with all relevant stakeholders involved in a project
  • An ability to perform at a high level in a matrixed organization, working collaboratively in interdepartmental teams to achieve objectives and manage multiple projects and development relationships simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel to our Miami office and throughout the U.S. to meet stakeholders around Matrix’s projects
  • Strong communication skills with the demonstrated ability to positively and effectively communicate with regulators, elected officials, community members developers, engineers and other team members
