Overview


The Paralegal is responsible for assisting attorneys in legal department by providing paralegal and reporting assistance on legal and regulatory matters related to the Company. A wide range of skills will be required, including writing, editing, cite-checking, researching and understanding of computer systems and the use of these in facilitating calendar and document management, and considerable attention to details and processes. A rapid pace, stringent deadlines, and a large volume of work characterize this department.


The position requires extensive contact and work with employees at all levels of the organization, as well as with members, customers, state and federal regulators and outside counsel. The authority of and supervision required for this position varies based upon the project and the level of experience of the incumbent. In all cases, the employee is expected to work with minimal supervision


Essential Functions


  • Provide guidance/assistance within areas of expertise to other employees, as needed
  • Review contracts where needed
  • Ability to perform legal research
  • Perform general duties such as providing information to callers, routine correspondence, and general file maintenance with a high level of service responsiveness
  • Maintain and prepare status reports for the Legal Department
  • Understand and comply with SPP Policies and Procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Cite-check legal documents to verify accuracy as used and otherwise proof read a wide variety of documents
  • Assist with the tracking of Federal and State dockets and other legal and regulatory matters for the company
  • Provide reports on matters within the purview of the position
  • Drafts and reviews/suggests revisions to correspondence for all departments to assure compliance with legal requirements of the company
  • Assist with preparation of filings in Federal and State dockets.
  • Provide information, as requested and appropriate, to employees, members, Directors, customers, regulators and outside counsel
  • Manage and maintain files for the Legal Department
  • Special projects as assigned
  • Work on the record retention policy/practices for the Company


Qualifications


Education Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or 2 years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree


Experience Requirements


  • Paralegal I - No experience required
  • Paralegal III - 6+ Years of Relevant Experience
  • Paralegal II - 3+ Years of Relevant Experience


Other Requirements


  • General understanding of the law and legal documentation
  • Ability to work well under stress and within deadlines, despite interruptions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in word processing and spreadsheets
  • Excellent organizational skills, with considerable attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals, inside and outside the Company, personally, via phone and in writing
  • Ability to work independently, requiring little day-to-day supervision
  • Regular attendance and punctuality
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets
  • Flexibility and the ability to function with constantly changing and multiple priorities

Work Environment


This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type And Expected Hours Of Work


This is a full-time position. Days and hours of workweek are Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Working extended hours may be required.


Travel Requirement


This position requires minimal (5% or less) travel
