Job Description

At Ford Motor Company, we believe freedom of movement drives human progress. We also believe in providing you with the freedom to define and realize your dreams! With our incredible plans for the future of mobility, we have a wide variety of opportunities for you to accelerate your career potential as you help us define tomorrow’s transportation.

Ford Model E is responsible for developing the key technologies and capabilities – such as EV platforms, batteries, e-motors, inverters, charging and recycling – to create ground-up, breakthrough electric vehicles. By joining the best software, engineering, design and UX talent, you will be a part of creating new technologies and concepts that can be applied across the Ford enterprise. Being on the Ford Model E team means building the future as Ford’s center of innovation and growth through electric and connected vehicles and services.

Current Seating commodities include structures, mechanisms, actuators, cushions, wire harnesses, controllers, sensors, software, trims and so on. However, future seating solutions are not limited to these. Progression is targeted. A seat can be defined as a product which enables comfortable support for vehicular occupants. In some sense, a seat can be viewed as a moving robotic structural art piece.

Team members typically play dual roles as experts and polymaths. Each team member typically uses their particular expertise as a superpower to complement the team. You shall be part of the Seating Engineering Team which resides within Ford Model E -Vehicle Engineering Group.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

As a Mechanical Engineer specializing in seat packing comfort, your role will involve designing and developing mechanical components and systems to optimize the packaging and comfort aspects of automotive seating. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the creation of efficient, ergonomic, and comfortable seating solutions.

Key Responsibilities :

System Design and Development:

  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to integrate various components into a cohesive seating system.
  • Design and develop mechatronic systems for automotive seating, including seat adjustment mechanisms, lumbar support, heating/cooling systems, and occupant sensing technologies.
  • Optimize system design for safety, comfort, ergonomics, and manufacturability.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and prototype testing to validate system performance and functionality.

Electrical and Electronics Integration:

  • Design and implement electrical circuits, ensuring compatibility with vehicle systems and compliance with relevant industry standards.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical and electronic components during production.
  • Develop and test control algorithms for automated seat adjustments and occupant detection systems.
  • Select and integrate electrical and electronic components such as motors, sensors, actuators, control units, and wiring harnesses into the seating system.

System Testing and Validation:

  • Develop test plans and conduct performance, durability, and reliability testing of mechatronic seating systems.
  • Analyze test data, identify issues, and propose design modifications or improvements, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with vehicle integration teams to ensure proper system functionality and compliance with automotive regulations and safety standards.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Create detailed engineering documentation, including specifications, design guidelines, test procedures, and technical reports.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements related to automotive seating systems.

Qualifications

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • 1+ year of experience in a factory setting launching a new product
  • 1+ year of experience in the production release process
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 1+ years of experience using 3D CAD software collaboratively (Catia V5/V6, 3DX, etc.)

Preferred Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, electronics, and control systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for 3D modeling and simulation.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Previous experience in the automotive industry or with seating systems is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience with software programming languages such as C/C++, MATLAB, or Python for control system development.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Familiarity with automotive industry standards and regulations.
  • Attention to detail and a focus on delivering high-quality solutions.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

What you’ll receive in return:

As part of the Ford family, you’ll enjoy excellent compensation and a comprehensive benefits package that includes generous PTO, retirement, savings and stock investment plans, incentive compensation and much more. You’ll also experience exciting opportunities for professional and personal growth and recognition.

If you have what it takes to help us redefine the future of mobility, we’d love to have you join us.
