We are seeking a highly motivated individual with scientific background and
laboratory management experience to join us as a Manager, Laboratory Operations in Research. You will perform laboratory operations and management to enable our Research organization in advancing our exciting and expansive CAR T pipeline and next generation adaptive immunotherapies. You will be expected to work with supply centers and guide department purchasing, facilitate efforts for optimization of laboratory organization, perform regular audits to ensure safety compliance within the lab areas, interface with key stakeholders such as EH S, Facilities, Purchasing, etc., and oversee continuous improvement efforts to ensure operational efficiency. The Manager, Laboratory Operations will work closely with the scientific staff to evaluate needs to optimize laboratory operations, including managing new equipment acquisitions, coordinating facility activities/capital projects, scheduling educational seminars, hosting regular operations updates and supporting new employee onboarding etc.
Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
- Guides small special projects to support operations, such as organizing lab cleaning, freezer defrosting, and space planning.
- Guides Environmental Health and Safety initiatives seeking to continually improve safety culture and processes.
- Interacts closely with research staff using a customer service-based approach to solve complex operational workflow and lab management issues.
- Assists research team(s) with unique ad hoc requests for laboratory services
- Attends team meetings as needed
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to increase operational efficiency of the laboratory, supporting establishment of new programs and processes to fit future laboratory expansion projects
- Assists in managing laboratory supply inventory.
- Oversee and maintain laboratory policies and procedures for equipment maintenance, laboratory cleanliness and organization, Environmental Health and Safety requirements
- Responsible for space utilization and equipment moves, as well as coordinating emerging equipment and technology demonstrations with vendors
- Acts as liaison for service requests between laboratory staff and EH S, Facilities, IT, and Finance departments.
- Other duties as may be assigned
- Assist with implementation of new equipment, programs and/or procedures in the assigned area(s) as needed
- Works with finance to assist with order request processing and creation of standing POs.
- Assists with on- and off-boarding of staff.
- Work closely with Facilities department to optimize equipment maintenance schedules, preparing equipment for service and coordinating scheduling with equipment end users.
Basic Qualifications:
- Associate and 8+ years of hands-on experience in a laboratory OR
- High School Diploma/GED and 10+ years of hands-on experience in a laboratory
- Bachelor’s and 6+ years of hands-on experience in a laboratory OR
- Master’s and 4+ years of hands-on experience in a laboratory OR
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years laboratory management experience preferred
- Comfortable in a fast-paced company environment with potentially minimal direction and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities
- Excellent understanding (advanced skills) of Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- A demonstrated experience of successful laboratory, safety and facilities management leadership experience as demonstrated by articulated results and accomplishments.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and leading sustainability efforts for laboratory and/or business reporting
- Self-motivated with a deep sense of ownership in areas of responsibility
- Exceptional customer service, relationship building and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential
- Prior experience with hazardous, chemical, and biohazardous waste management and training programs

The salary range for this position is: $117,725.00 - $152,350.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
