Laboratory Coordinator Jobs

Provide general lab coordination and operational support to supervise experiments and equipment use in Physics & Astronomy teaching laboratory spaces. Major duties include: training and supervising teaching assistants on proper use of equipment for a variety of experiments, assisting with setup/removal of experiments and/or demonstrations, assisting with general laboratory infrastructure and/or equipment maintenance/repairs projects, and development of data analysis methods. Incumbent applies working knowledge of physics concepts and experimental design to assist with lab course operations, and updates/revisions to experiments as directed by supervisor. Helps maintain documentation an infrastructure to support introductory labs, makes contributions to experiment revisions, and performs testing/modifications to lab equipment as assigned. Assists with the development of new lab procedures, and/or experiment materials, websites, and/or lab trainings, and contributes to other projects with assigned scope that aim to improve physics instruction and the safe/effective use of laboratory equipment. Collaborate with faculty and/or staff as directed to provide general operational support to the Instructional Labs Group as needed.

Required/Preferred
1. Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, astronomy, or related physical science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Working knowledge of introductory physics concepts and familiarity with physics experiment equipment/methodologies used in instructional labs settings.

3. Demonstrated teaching experience in a physics/astronomy laboratory environment or equivalent combination of education/teaching experience in higher education.

4. Ability to work efficiently and effectively, either independently or as a member of a team, on a variety of simultaneous lab coordination tasks as directed.

5. Familiarity with modern data acquisition equipment, associated technologies, interfaces, analysis tools, and/or software used in instructional labs settings.

6. Strong interpersonal skills to work with and communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing, at various levels.

7. Ability to supervise and train students and/or teaching assistants on various equipment and procedures for a variety of lab courses.

8. Skill in using electronic instrumentation such as signal analyzers, diagnostic meters, frequency generators, and power supplies.

9. Skill in using electrician's hand and power tools such as soldering irons, heat guns, wire strippers, and 3D printers to repair, replace or modify lab equipment.
