Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an IT Customer Support - Journey position. This position is located in our Central Region Office (CRO) in Union Gap, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

IT customer service representatives are skilled in diagnosing and resolving technical issues. They engage with customers through various communication channels, such as phone, email, or chat, to understand the problem and guide them through troubleshooting steps.

In this role, you will use your knowledge of IT systems, software, and hardware to identify the root cause of problems and provide effective solutions with the ultimate goal of ensuring customer satisfaction. As an IT Customer Support Representative, you will be dedicated to providing a positive experience, going the extra mile to resolve customer issues promptly and efficiently, and you will celebrate successful resolutions and strive for high customer ratings, building strong relationships and loyalty.

Program Mission: The Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) is the central provider of strategic and tactical support for the use of Information Technology (IT) within Ecology. The mission of ITSO is to create and support useful technology services that adapt for the future and support Ecology’s mission.

Tele-work options for this position: This position is expected to work in the office 3 days per week and will be eligible for up to a 40% tele-work schedule. Duties


What makes this role unique?

IT customer service involves tackling complex issues and finding innovative solutions. In this role, you will often encounter unique challenges that require analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. You may need to research, test, and experiment with different approaches to resolve customer problems, ensuring customer satisfaction and maintaining high-quality service. You will support end user computer needs so that they can complete their work of making Washington State a better place to live by protecting the environment.

What you will do:
  • Use clear communication and actively listen to the customer to get to the root of the problem.
  • Possess strong technical knowledge and troubleshooting techniques to provided efficient support to customers.
  • Continuously learn new skills and tools in order to stay current with the ever-changing technology landscape.
  • Show Empathy and patience for the customer to provide excellent customer service.
  • Clearly and accurately document work performed in the ticket for tracking and reference purposes.
  • Manage time and prioritize workloads effectively in order to resolve customer issues in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1: Three (3) years of experience, within the last (5) years, in application software/system testing, installing and/or maintaining computers software or hardware, providing direct customer technical support in IT that includes one year of experience installing computer operating systems, and includes one year of experience installing and supporting office productivity software.

Option 2: An Associate’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology (IT), Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), or closely related field OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in Information Technology (IT) or related program AND one (1) year of experience, within the last (5) years, in application software/system testing, installing and/or maintaining computers software or hardware, providing direct customer technical support in IT that includes one year of experience installing computer operating systems, and includes one year of experience installing and supporting office productivity software.

Note: Completion of CompTIA, A+ or related certification will qualify for one year of the required experience noted above.

Possible Combinations
College credit hours or degree - as listed above.
Years of required experience - as listed above.

Combination 1
No college credit hours or degree.
3 years of experience.

Combination 2
30-59 semester or 45-89 quarter credits OR Completion of CompTIA, A+ or related certification.
2 years of experience.

Combination 3
60-89 semester or 90-134 quarter credits (AA degree) OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in IT or related program.
1 year of experience.

Desired Qualifications:
