(I) Public Relations Jobs

The SXSW Public Relations Department accepts up to three for-credit or not-for-credit interns each term (Spring, Summer and Fall). We accept interns from universities across the greater Austin University system and from any departments.

During the hybrid (virtual and in person) internship, students will gain significant exposure and experience in all aspects of entertainment communications and events production, learning many skills in the communications toolbox. The Public Relations team works directly with media, publicists, talent, distributors and a wide swath of the entertainment industry, as well as other SXSW departments. While the tasks and learning opportunities for each internship period will be shaped by its timing in the calendar year, learning modules will ensure all interns achieve valuable insights, skills and marketable experience working in the communications shop for a world-renowned event dedicated to helping creative people achieve their goals.

What You Will Learn

• Strategy, mechanics, timing and processes for planning and executing red carpets, junkets, and other public relations activities.
• Year-round media cultivation and management, as well as proficiency in accreditation processes, and outlet and journalist analysis.
• Sophisticated earned-media tracking and analysis as it relates to an event such as SXSW and its specific goals and objectives across events using customized cision and hubspot tools.
• Filemaker Pro, Cision, Muckrack, WebDAM, and other data management tools.
• Touch points and relationship management with talent, publicists, and external consultants throughout the festival cycle, from introduction to post event evaluation.

Physical Requirements

Frequently required to sit and/or stand for long periods of time. This position potentially requires being in front of a computer screen & using a telephone for extended periods of time. This position requires you to stay upwards of 7-10 consecutive days away from home.

Work Location & Schedule:

The position is located in Austin, Texas. This is a paid internship at $12.00/hr with a required time commitment of approximately 10-16 hours a week from January 2023 to May 2023, full-time March 10 - March 19, returning to a 10-16 hours per week schedule through the end of March. Internship hours are flexible depending on class schedule and availability.
