Job Description

Job Title: Human Rights Organizer

Reports To: Communication and Policy Director

Annual Salary Range: $60,320 - $62,816 Annually

Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours per week) with comprehensive health benefits

Organization Overview:

The Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco, established in 1987, aims to actively engage impoverished individuals and frontline staff in shaping, evaluating, and implementing public policies and services that lead to lasting solutions to poverty. What sets us apart is our unique composition, where individuals experiencing low income and homelessness drive every aspect of our organization, including volunteers, staff, and leadership.

Position Summary:

As a Human Rights Organizer, you will be part of the Human Rights Workgroup, a project within the Coalition on Homelessness. This workgroup is dedicated to defending the human rights of homeless individuals, particularly those living on the streets and in shelters.

Responsibilities:

- Mobilize and empower homeless and low-income individuals to combat human rights violations and advocate for genuine solutions to the challenges faced by homeless communities, aligning with the COH's philosophy of homeless-directed work.

- Provide supervision and support to volunteers, including scheduling, training, recruitment, and maintaining open communication.

- Facilitate the Work Group's activities by implementing action plans, agendas, and meeting minutes based on recommendations received.

- Collaborate with the media to generate press releases, organize direct actions, press conferences, and community events to raise public awareness about the needs of homeless families.

- Develop a comprehensive understanding of shelter policies and criminal justice issues relevant to COH's work, and educate workgroup members and the broader public on these matters.

- Engage in organization-wide efforts to effect change by collaborating with other projects and contributing to fundraising initiatives.

- Advocate for constituents during meetings with policymakers and community groups.

- Maintain project infrastructure and adhere to the organizing methodology outlined by the Coalition on Homelessness.

- Draft public policies, position papers, reports, opinion editorials, and other materials to align with the project's goals for institutional change.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Familiarity with homelessness in San Francisco and a willingness to actively engage with diverse communities daily.

- Excellent writing skills to effectively communicate the organization's messages.

- Proficiency in grassroots organizing methods.

- Ability to translate broad concepts identified during outreach efforts into specific action plans that drive meaningful change.

- Knowledge of San Francisco's governmental structures.

- Proficiency in using Macintosh computers and word processing software.

- Strong multitasking abilities and self-initiative to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

- Willingness to perform other duties as assigned.

Preference will be given to San Francisco residents who have personally experienced poverty and homelessness. Candidates from diverse backgrounds, including people of color and those who have faced social oppression, are strongly encouraged to apply.
